How to Fix a Running Toilet

Flush toilets are generally very simple mechanisms that have not changed much since they were first invented. The tank on the back of the toilet is filled with water and there is usually a float controlled valve that stops the water flowing into the tank when it is full, this is called the ballcock valve. There is a second valve controlled by the handle on the toilet that releases the water in the tank so it flushes the bowl, this is called the flush valve. When the handle is released the flush valve should close and the tank should fill again until the float reaches a level that shuts the ballcock valve and stops the water flowing into the tank.

If your toilet keeps running then this indicates that the water is continuing to run into the tank and one of the valves is not working correctly. There is an overflow tube in the toilet tank to prevent water from overflowing the tank and onto the floor. The water in the tank is clean water directly from your household supply and there will usually be a tap just below the toilet to shutoff the flow of water to the tank.

Flush Valve

The flush valve is the first suspect if your toilet keeps running. If the flush valve does not stop the water from flowing out of the tank then the float will not reach a level to shut the ballcock valve and the water keeps running into the tank. If your toilet runs intermittently then it could be a slow leak through the flush valve and the float may rise enough at first to shut off the water but then slowly the water level drops until the ballcock valve opens again to let in more water.

If jiggling the handle stops the toilet running then you should look at the chain or lever than connects the handle to the flush valve. The flush valve may look like a softball sized rubber ball on a hinge type mechanism at the bottom of the tank. It is connected by a chain or lever to the handle so it is pulled up on its hinge from its seat (the hole at the bottom of the tank) and the water escapes. If the chain is tangled or the lever bent the flush valve may not be returning properly to its seat and the water is not stopped from running out of the tank. Make sure the chain is long enough to let the flush valve close properly.

If the flush valve is old, it may have become hardened or bent in such a way that it is not closing properly. This is usually what causes your toilet to run intermittently. A new flush valve is only a few dollars at your local hardware or plumbing supply store. Be sure to take your old flush valve and the make and model of your toilet with you when you buy a new one. To test your flush valve before you remove it, try adding some food coloring to the water in the tank and then watch the water in the toilet bowl to see if it starts to change color indicating that water is escaping from the tank into the bowl. It may take a few hours for the water in the bowl to change color if it is a slow leak.

To empty the tank to remove your flush valve, first shutoff the water to the tank at the tap below the toilet then flush the water from the tank. Disconnect the chain or lever from the flush valve and slide it out of its hinging mechanism.

Ballcock Valve

The other suspect that might keep your toilet running is the ballcok valve and the float. Usually this is adjusted correctly when the toilet is installed but it is possible that the float is not rising high enough to shut the ballcock valve. If the water is running down the overflow tube then this is an indication that the ballcock valve is not shutting. If you add food coloring to the water in the tank and you do not see a change in the color of the water in the tank after waiting a few hours then it is probably the ballcock valve that is not working correctly. You may see adjusting screws on the top of the ballcock valve connected to a rod that holds the float. You want to lower the float so it shuts the valve sooner as the water rises. Sometime bending the rod a bit to lower the float also works. You should also check to make sure that your float is actually floating.

Teflon Non Stick Coatings - The ABCs of PTFE

Teflon, a tradename of DuPont, is most closely associated with the fluoropolymer, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). With its exceptional release (non stick), low friction or dry lubrication, PTFE is one of the most widely recognized compounds used throughout the world. In fact, its uses are almost endless.

Formed by free radical vinyl polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), PTFE is recognized for its high thermal stability. Continuous service temperatures of 500 F are typical, though higher temperatures can be satisfactorily sustained for shorter duration.

Mechanical properties include flexibility at low (cryogenic) temperatures, abrasion resistance and mechanical toughness. Keep in mind that wear factors can be dramatically improved by internal or external material reinforcements. This is especially true using PTFE dispersions.

Non-lubricated mechanical systems have reported coefficients of friction as low as 0.02-0.04. Even at higher dynamic PV limits, (8,000 to 10,000) coefficients of friction of 0.10 or less are attainable. Results will vary with load, rates of travel, distance, surface finish, temperature, and other system-dependent parameters. PTFE resins exhibit exceptionally low friction (in otherwise non-lubricated environments), at lower surface velocities, pressures greater than 5 pounds per square inch. Curiously, friction actually increases with sliding speed up to 100 feet per minute, under all pressure conditions. But it's this phenomenon that prevents 'stick-slip' tendencies. Other benefits include 'anti-squeak' or 'no noise' even at the highest speeds. Above 150 feet per minute, for example, sliding velocity has little effect (on friction) at combinations of pressure and velocity below the composition's PV limit. Static friction of Dupont Teflon PTFE resins decrease with increasing pressure.

'PV' limits define the maximum combination of pressure and rub-velocity that materials can operate continuously without lubrication. PV limits for PTFE approach zero at temperatures between 550F and 600 F. Useful PV limits must take into account the composition's wear characteristics and allowable wear for the application. When considering Dupont products such as PTFE for dry lubrication, low friction, you must consider 'creep' or 'cold flow'. Generally, a plastic material subjected to continuous load experiences a continued deformation with time called creep or cold flow. Deformation can be significant, even at room temperature or below; hence, the name 'cold flow'.

Creep is defined as the total deformation under stress after a specified time in a given environment beyond that instantaneous strain which occurs immediately upon loading. Independent variables affecting creep are time under load, temperature, and load or stress level.

So long as the stress level is below the elastic limit of the material, performance is sustainable. And beyond a certain point, creep is small and may be neglected for many applications. In many cases, too, there is compressive recovery from various percentages of strain. Nearly complete where the original strain does not exceed the yield strain.

Much of this information pertains to PTFE in a pure (homogeneous) state. So, keep in mind the information presented here doesn't account for composites of PTFE available today. Various reinforcements to create PTFE composites can include 'internal' binders, co-polymers or fillers. Of course there are 'external' forms of PTFE reinforcements, too, including anodize, plating, thermal spray, or other advanced coating processes.

Definition of "Halogen-free" Leaves Many Materials Incorrectly Classified: The Florine Loophole

While chlorine and bromine are widely recognized, reported and restricted as halogens in many applications, it is noteworthy that fluorine, iodine, and astatine (other Group 17/VIIA halogens on the Periodic Table of the Elements) are not restricted in the accepted industry definitions of "halogen-free". Dependent on the industry considering the "halogen-free" designator, chlorine and bromine are the only halogens restricted and then at levels below 900-1,000 parts per million.

In the case of fluorine used in plastics, many anti-drip agents employed in "halogen-free" plastic compounds including polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), better known as Teflon®, contain fluorine and the anti-drip agents have been reported to be used in the 0.1-1.4 wt% range. Some of these products can contain significant quantities of fluorine exceeding the level typically accepted under IEC 61249-2-21 as content limits established for other halogens (0.09% or 900 parts per million). In other cases, fluorinated salts may be formulated into plastic products at typical levels of 800 parts per million, especially plastic parts produced from polycarbonate, to impart flame retardant properties while the product is labeled "halogen-free."

Additionally, it is noteworthy to consider that fluorinated polymeric resins incorporated or alloyed into a plastic compound also do not contribute to the "halogen-free" standing of a finished polymer because of the omission of fluorine from the list of considered halogens. Such fluorinated resins that could be incorporated or alloyed to impart improved electrical, flammability and processing properties include:

o polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF),

o ethylenetrifluoroethylene (ETFE)

o copolymers of ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene (ECTFE)

o polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

o fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP)

The apparent omission of fluorine, a halogen used in polymeric additives and plastics that are subsequently compounded into other plastics regularly to impart flame resistance and other properties, is due primarily to test methodology and limitations in detecting fluorine. The test methods employed to detect bromine and chlorine do not have the capability to detect fluorine and as such fluorine is left undetected and unreported although it too is a halogen. Without significant address in test methodology, it is unlikely that total halogen content will be considered by regulators in the near future; however, environmentalists have become aware of fluorine toxicology and the potential human effects in recent developments related to groundwater contamination by fluorinated compounds and potential effects of thermal decomposition of PTFE.

Recent concerns over the potential toxicological effects of groundwater contamination by some fluorinated precursors and by-products including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in the United States as well as potential human toxicological effects caused through contact with products containing PTFE produced by DuPont, better known as Teflon®, could cause a review of this apparent dual status for halogen materials used throughout industry. According to the environmental investigative organization Environmental Working Group:

"... in the past five years, the multi-billion dollar "perfluorochemical" (PFC) industry, which underpins such world-famous brands as Teflon®, Stainmaster®, Scotchgard® and Gore-Tex®, has emerged as a regulatory priority for scientists and officials at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The PFC family is characterized by chains of carbon atoms of varying lengths, to which fluorine atoms are strongly bonded, yielding essentially indestructible chemicals that until recently were thought to be biologically inert. No one thinks so now."

Since 2000, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) has undertaken a significant review of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). [US EPA PFOA Factsheet] In 2000, the US EPA peremptorily forced the elimination of PFOS, the chemical used for decades as the active ingredient in the popular Scotchgard® stain and water repellant from 3M. At about the same time, 3M ceased manufacture of the related perfluorochemical PFOA.

Throughout 2005, the United States Environmental Protection Agency has had PFOA under intense regulatory scrutiny due to reports of groundwater contamination. PFOA is most widely used in the manufacture of PTFE. One significant brand of PTFE under scrutiny is Dupont Teflon®. Due to findings from toxicity studies and by the presence of PFOA in the blood of more than 90 percent of the United States population, the United States Environmental Protection Agency continues its review of human toxicity studies and potential health effects.

In December 2005, Dupont reached a US$16.5 million settlement agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in an enforcement action related to the chemical compound PFOA; this settlement follows a civil settlement of US$107 million in March 2005 on related matters concerning alleged PFOA contamination of local drinking water by Dupont in West Virginia, USA.

In 2006, the issue of PFOA and PFOS content in plastics and other materials will be considered by many states. In California (USA), a coalition consisting of the United Steelworkers (USW), Sierra Club, Environmental Law Foundation, Environment California, U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Environmental Working Group (EWG) filed a petition to have PFOA listed as "a chemical that is known to the state to cause cancer" under California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, commonly referred to as Proposition 65. If adopted, the finding would require information labels on products based on specific toxicological findings under California Right to Know requirements. Additionally, a preliminary report on perfluorochemical contamination in Minnesota was considered by the Senate Environmental Committee in February 2006.

In April 2006, sixteen lawsuits filed in a US$5 billion class-action suit have been transferred to a Federal Court in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. Court papers allege Teflon® makers withheld information about chemicals used to make Teflon® chemicals that are allegedly released when the pans are heated. Dupont, the manufacturer of Teflon® says the material is safe.

With the settlements in recent cases, pending class actions in Iowa (USA) related to potential human poisoning from fluorinated stick-free cooking surfaces and the information that has now been developed and exchanged during peer review, environmental watchdog groups and regulatory officials alike are continuing their reviews and investigations into the widespread use of perfluorochemicals in many industries with no immediate indication of potential outcome. It should be noted that the use of perfluorochemicals as anti-drip agents and flame retardants or the use of fluorinated polymers like PVDF or FEP has not been affected by any of the investigations to this point. However, because the use of perfluorochemicals is allowed within the guidelines of "halogen-free" materials, the reformulation of polymeric materials to eliminate the use of these scrutinized materials provides for significant opportunity from a technological development standpoint in providing truly "non-halogen" materials for the marketplace.

Plumbing System of a Boat

Boat plumbing is easy considering there are no pipes. The pipes in a yacht are replaced by flexible hoses which is easier to use.

Here are a few guidelines for your on-board water system.

• Tanks are best mounted low in the boat as it will be simple to add extra tanks given the space available. You can choose either a rigid polyethylene tank or flexible tank.

• Make sure that the vent of the tank is not higher than the fill to avoid overflow and use Teflon tapes on all threaded fittings. Avoid over tightening the fittings in plastic tanks and always secure hoses with stainless steel hose clamps.

• The hose that supplies drinking water should be non toxic, non-contaminating, taste free and approved by FDA. The common choice for water hose is PVC reinforced with polyester braid. The hoses that will be used for draining purposes should be stronger than vinyl hose. For this, the best option is reinforced rubber hose. Make sure to double clamp all the hoses that are connected through hull fittings.

• Boats can have either an electric pump or manual pump. It is advantageous to use manual pumps as they reduce water wastage which can be boon for boats spending long periods away from water supplies.

• Some water systems have an accumulator. Large accumulators have pressurized bladders in them, but most small ones are just empty tanks tied into the line downstream of the pump. When the pump runs, it tries to fill the tank from the bottom, compressing the air trapped inside the tank. The pressure from the tank allows small amounts of water to be drawn without the necessity of the pump running, thus reducing pump cycling.

• To operate a water heater you will need a pressurized water system. Only metal fittings must be used to plumb water heater.

• Head sinks must be plumbed to drain into the bowl of the toilet to avoid flooding. To avoid bilge odor and unnecessary jamming, shower pans should include a discharge pump which can be automatic or connected to a switch. The through - hull discharge outlet should always be above the water.

If you are installing a deck wash pump, use a Y- or T-connector to tie into an existing inlet line to keep the hose from collapsing use tough rubber suction.The intake line should have a strainer to filter off debris.

We want them to look good, cruise smoothly and last a long time. Then of course there is the weather. Man is constantly adapting to his environment and adjusting to his climate. We put stuff on the roads so we can drive in any weather without fear of becoming the next human driven hockey puck.

During the Winter Months different agencies apply different things to the roads to keep them drivable like salt, sand and chemicals such as de-icing chemicals, which are environmentally friendly but can destroy a regular wax job. Magnesium Sulfate works great to keep cars from sliding into the guardrails and ditches, but it plays hell on an automobiles finish. With rust and corrosion threatening to destroy your investment and reduce the value of your car by thousands of dollars the stakes become high. We may not be able to control the weather quite yet, but we can give you the tips from years of experience and industry knowledge to help you minimize your risk, fight back against jack frost and work with mother nature to co-exist and cruise successfully through winter. Winter is coming and will soon be in full swing. Roads will be packed with vacationers and outdoor sports aficionados. You and your car need to be ready. We know from experience that bare metal will rust when exposed to moisture and harsh elements. Take a look around your car, are there paint chips? Even small chips can allow moisture to get underneath your cars finish and work its way all the way through the metal. Holes in your car needless to say will not improve your chances for good resale value. And if your car is on a lease they will be hitting you hard on its return. There are several things you can do to take care of these chips now. To find a chip repair person go to Paint Bull's website and find one of their 500 mobile chip repair dealers. If you have a fiberglass body or a primarily plastic car such as a Saturn it may not be as critical if you have a chip or two.

Every car that drives through harsh winter climates needs some type of undercoating. There are many options. You can go down to your local auto parts store, buy a can of undercoating and spray it on yourself or you can go to any auto detailing company and have it done for about $80-100. There are a few detailing companies who have a number of stores throughout the country as well as mobile units, which can provide this undercoating for you. You can also go ziebart's website, they have 216 stores Nationwide. They have been closing stores at a fast rate of about 30 per year. They charge about $200-300 and will touch up the undercoating job free each year. They use this as a gimmick to get you in their store next year to sell you more stuff. Their guarantee is of questionable value since if the store closes then who will do the guarantee wok. Another problem with the lifetime guarantee is that most people do not own their cars for their entire life.

If you own a truck or a cargo van you may consider a lining. There are a few different types of linings. Rhino Lining at Rhino Lining Wesbite has a rubber like lining. An average bed runs about $300. There is Line X, which is a harder liner at Line-X website and Permatech which has a really good liner that is between the hard Line X liner and the softer a Rhino Lining. What can you do to protect your cars paint? Several things. It is important to understand the different types of wax and how they perform against salt spray tests. Carnauba the most popular wax name amongst consumers, will not hold up well under harsh salt conditions, de-icing wetted areas or on magnesium chloride soaked roads. It does however work well against roads, which have been covered, with sand. Teflon and silicone waxes do not work well in any of these conditions or in colder climates.

So what is the best modern wax for these Winter environments? Polymers work best, but are usually put on in a liquid form and therefore goes on in thinner coats. It may take several coats to insure that the protection last longer than three months. It is best to put on several coats and then re-apply in three months. If you do not feel that you want to do this yourself you can call several companies that provide onsite service at home or office. National Detail Systems has over 300 dealers.

Ask for polymer wax and ask for a multiple coat discount. Expect to pay $65-90 plus $15-25 for each additional coat from National Detail Dealers. It will vary significantly from dealer to dealer. The Car Wash Guys have standard pricing and charge $35 for an exterior polymer coat and charge $10 for additional coats. Many car washes also have express detailing service starting at anywhere from $35-55. To get a listing of car washes and the new J.D. Powers Car Club website. This site is quite helpful. The website will give you a map to the nearest carwash based on the zip code you put in. You can print it out and drive down and get your car waxed. Fixed site carwashes vary so much from operator to operator it is hard to say what additional coats might cost, it may even depend on the day of the week you go, which manager is working and how busy they are that day. You should try to go on a Tuesday.

You may wish to put a protective coating on your cars carpets. The very popular product ScotchGuard was taken off the market this year due to environmental problems in manufacturing and is no longer available. Blue Coral does make a similar aerosol product although not as good as the former 3M leading brand. With new genetic woven splicing of nylon into cotton plants we are seeing a new breed of interior carpeting in vehicles. It is more durable easier to clean and holds up well under multiple steam cleaning passes. Perhaps a simple plastic cover over the carpets might be your best bet. Most modern day min-vans come standard with plastic covers and if yours did not, you can buy plastic covers for next to nothing at any auto parts store.

There are also some very high tech solutions to automotive protection. For window glass there is a hydrophobic treatment called Diamon Fusion. It prevents chips in the window and allows you to drive in heavy rain without use of wipers. A simple solution may be RainX, which can be purchased at any auto parts store for about $5. Be sure to ask them to apply it to the interior windows also because it prevents unnecessary fogging when you do not have your defroster set exactly right. It is put on 2 to 4 milimeters thick. Glass of course is impervious to moisture.

This new revolution in ceramic technology is also being perfected by the Japanese. PP&G, the leading automotive paint company, is also on the cutting edge of this new field and we may soon have a new and more advanced clear coat for cars for the 21st century. That is the good news. We may see a new clear coat for cars coming out which will make waxes obsolete in the next few years. The bad news is that for now there is no substitute for waxes, coatings and undercoating. You can pay now or pay later. You really should consider protecting your investment. If you neglect to take this opportunity to plan your winterizing strategy, Mother Nature already has a plan of her own and she is coming soon.

Many people are only going to keep their car for two years on a lease and then trade it in for a new model. Waterless Stainless Steel Cookware Or Nonstick - Which is the Better Choice?

I love to cook, but it is also important to me that the meals I serve my family are both nutritious and healthy. I have always been comfortable using stainless steel saucepans but when it came to frying something on the stove, I would often resort to nonstick. Now that I've started using stainless steel cookware more extensively, I wonder why I didn't make the transition earlier.

In the late 1990s and early 2000's there were a lot of news reports showing that chemicals known as PFO's, PFOA's (perflurooctanoic acid)and PFC's were being released from the Teflon cookware into our bodies. There is evidence that this chemical has been linked to cancer in lab animals and may, in fact, have led to birth defects in DuPont employees. While DuPont, the main manufacturer and user of these chemicals, claims that these chemicals are safe, DuPont has paid out millions of dollars in compensation not only to their employees but also to the people living in the vicinity of the Parkensburg factory. Whether Teflon is completely safe to use in your home is still debatable, for even DuPont's own experts advise caution when using nonstick items, particularly at high temperatures. Studies indicate that a pan heated to 680 degree F. (which could take only minutes if a pan is left unattended to preheat) does release PFOA. Based on the growing health concerns about nonstick cookware, though it is initially cheaper to purchase, it may not be the best decision in the long run.

After researching both Teflon and stainless steel cookware, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that some of the criticisms of stainless steel cookware are unfounded. True, the initial cost of stainless cookware can be expensive, ranging in price from $300 to $2,500 for good quality stainless cookware. However, one should really consider it an investment that will last a lifetime with proper care. Stainless steel is noted for its durability and ability to resist food acids and alkaline foods as well. Steel is mixed with chromium and nickel to produce a corrosion-resistant steel that is scratch resistant and easy to clean.

The better-quality stainless steel waterless cookware is 5-ply (304 surgical stainless steel, aluminum alloy (a bonding agent for heat transfer), pure aluminum for fast and even heat distribution, aluminum alloy acting as a bonding agent for heat transfer, and surgical stainless steel) or 7-ply (304 surgical stainless steel, carbon, 304 surgical stainless steel, aluminum alloy, pure aluminum, aluminum alloy, and AISI 430 stainless steel). However, it would not be good on the outer layer because it would corrode and enter our food. Stainless steel effectively protects the food and cookware.

Many choose Teflon pans over stainless steel because they believe that nonstick pans are easier to clean up. However, cooking with stainless steel does not mean that foods have to stick in the pan. By using quality cookware and following simple directions, you can produce a great meal every time. Stainless steel cookware with the heavy multi-ply bottom provides an even heat that, if properly regulated, will not cause your food to stick. After preheating your pan on medium, simply put your pieces of meat or poultry in the pan, let them sear for 5 - 7 minutes on one side, then use tongs or a spatula to turn over and sear on the other side for the same time. If you try to turn your meat too early, it will stick. However, if you follow the above directions, the sticking is minimal and cleanup is easy. With stainless steel, most foods are cooked on low or medium heat. High heat is not recommended. You'll need to get to know your stove. Gas stoves allow for more heat control, but since there is so much variance among stoves, it is recommended to start out at the lower heat.

The waterless (steam-controlled) stainless steel cookware offers a whole new dimension to your cooking experience. Not only will your foods retain more flavors, but your foods will be healthier because they will retain 98% of their vitamins and minerals compared to the 58% retention rate of conventional cookware. Because foods are cooked in minimal water (the natural water contained in most foods provides enough moisture), there is minimal shrinkage. Purchasing cookware can be a major investment! Therefore, before making that decision, spend some time researching your options. Weight the pros and cons of each and then make an informed decision. Pump Maintenance and Repair for Pressure Washers

If you have a pressure washer business you will eventually need to change out or repair the pump. There are a few things you should know to make such change outs easy. You may also need to study up on preventative maintenance so that you do not have to worry about pump failure. Your pressure washer probably has one of two different pumps if it is industrial grade. Either a Cat Pump or a General pump; both are industry standards. General is the leader in the industry for sales and many prefer Cat as it sucks better from plastic water tanks.

Your pump is powered by two parallel belts connected to your engine. You should make sure not to starve your pump from water. When the water tank is empty turn off the engine. Starving a pump will burn it out in about thirty-five minutes. The manufacturer says five to ten minutes, but that's not life threatening. Your pump has a safety feature whereby when you are not spraying the water, it will automatically by pass into the tank provided there is enough water for the complete loop. Thank you. We also thought it was one of our great ideas. You should change the oil in the pump every month. Make sure your pressure washer rig is on level ground and fill the pump to the red dot on the center of the eyeglass. Over filling is a really bad idea.

On your pump you will notice six large bolts. Inside of the holes are check valves with springs. After 300-500 hours you should change them. You can do this yourself. The valve kits are $60.000. It's very easy:

Unscrew bolts

Remove old valve

Replace valve

Make sure to seat the valve evenly

Screw the bolt back in by hand

Make sure the O-ring on the bolt is snug

Tighten with wrench pretty tight

Inspecting The Pump

If you drain the oil and it's got bubbles in it or has turned white, then you have a blown seal and water is getting into the oil because: It overheated due to water starvation; The casing cracked because of vibration; You forgot to change the oil, dummy ($600 mistake and one lost day's work if you can get the parts that fast).

Check to see if the belts are tight. If not tighten them. Look for water drips. A slow drip on the exit side of the pump could cost you as much as 150 PSI at the nozzle. A fast drip (two to three drops per second) could be a 250-300 PSI loss at the nozzle. A steady drip stream might be a 500 plus PSI loss. When you see water leaking, fix the leak ASAP. Be sure to use ample Teflon tape when re-tightening fittings. This will stop future leaks, prevent rust and make fittings easy to separate in the future.

A hole in a hose or leak on the inlet side of the pump causes air to get in. The pump will act as if it's starving for water. It might even pulsate. When the water level in your tank reaches a point below the leak in the hose, air will replace the water and you'll get zero pressure. That makes it very hard to wash anything.

Low pressure in the pump can be caused by a number of things; these are by far the most common, but this is not a complete list, generally if you go thru this list the problem will be solved, check the easiest things first such as water supply:

Faulty pressure gauge (Replace)

Out of water (Fill up tank)

Old or worn out tip at gun nozzle (Replace)

Incorrect tip (Remove and replace)

Belt slippage (Tighten belt)

Hose leaks (Fix leaks)

Faulty unloader (Replace)

Mis-adjusted unloader (Re-adjust)

Worn packing in pump (Take it to dealer)

Inline filter clogged with dirt (Clean it)

Obstruction in spray nozzle tip (Remove it)

Chemical metering valve sucking air (Turn it off)

Slow engine rpm (Check engine)

If you have a pulsating issue at the gun or the machine is Fluctuating pressure, this is a completely different problem than low pressure. You should check for: Worn piston packing (Call dealer). Pump sucking air (Fix hole), Blockage in valve (Remove, check valves and take out blockage). If it is fluctuating and very noisy or if your pump is only noisy check for:

Air in suction line (Check water supply and connections)

Broken or weak inlet or discharge valve springs (Call dealer)

Excessive matter in valves (Check and clean if necessary)

Worn bearings (Check and replace. If necessary, call dealer)

Vibrations from mounting (Tighten it. If unable, call dealer)

If you find the presence of water in the pump oil, it could be caused by: Blown pump head seals, High humidity in air (Change oil more often) or Piston packing worn then call your dealer. If water or oil drips from the bottom of the pump this could be a number of things such as Piston packing worn, the O-ring plunger retainer is worn, Oil seal worn, Pump head seal shot or Crack in pump head. If any of these call the dealer and see if they have the parts in stock, you may be able to fix it yourself if you feel confident, if not you will need to leave your machines with the dealer for repairs.

Pump lubrication should be done every three months or 500 hours, which ever comes first. Use SAE 40 weight oil or equivalent for Cat pumps. Use 20/30 weight non-detergent oil for General pumps. It should be hydraulic oil with anti-wear and rust inhibitor additives. The oil level should be checked by looking in the window on the side of the pump. Only fill oil half way to the red dot.

As a pressure washing contractor you must understand how to maintain and repair your equipment, think about it.

Cleaning Your Cookie Sheets

Cookie sheets can get very dirty and black from all the carbonized residues that are used while baking. Cookie sheets are not only used for cookies but also nachos, bacon, steak, etc. With all these foods on the cookie sheet it can get very dirty so make sure you clean it with the steps below.

Don't forget to clean the sheet regularly or when it gets dirty to avoid any harmful germs or grime that will end up on it. A tip I would recommend is to do this outdoors to avoid any odors or oven cleaner inside your house; this can be harmful.

When you are welding ally with a mig welder there are a few steps that you need to take to make sure that your machine is set up to handle the job.

Type of aluminum welding wire to use

Nine times out of 10 you're going to want to use a 5356 grade aluminium mig wire. The 5356 ally wire is a little bit more firmer which makes it easier to feed through your mig welding gun.

5356 is normally used for general aluminum welding tasks such as toolboxes, truck tipper bodies and trailers.

If you need to repair cast aluminum such as cylinder heads or engine water pumps you would want to use 4043 grade.

Most welding shops will use 1.2mm diameter wire which is 0.045". The larger the diameter of the wire, the more firmer that it becomes. Because ally wire is very soft it is better to use the larger diameter wire for feed ability.

Stainless steel brush

You must use a dedicated stainless steel brush for cleaning the area where you want to weld. This is because there is an oxide layer that needs to be removed. Please make sure that you do not use this brush on anything else. It must only be used on the ally. If you use it for other jobs in the shed contaminants will get into the aluminium and contaminate the weld.

Welding torch liner type

How to Change a Hot Water Tank

First you're going to want to turn off the gas, power, and water supply to the tank. Then put on a hose on the bottom on the hot water tank to drain the left over water out of the tank. If it's a gas water heater use your two pipe wrenches and disconnect the union, that is between the supply pipe and the inlet pipe or it might be a flared fitting. You can take the flue hat off too as well since the tank is not running.

Now that you tank is disconnected move it out of the way, and put your new one where the old one was. Make sure that you can get to all the dials a buttons properly when you put the tank back. A good rule of thumb is to use about 6 inches around. So this means make sure that there is nothing flammable within 6 inches of your tank. Make sure too that it sits level on the floor, you may have to make some shims.

Put Teflon tape on the inlet and outlet nipples and then put them into the new tank. Make sure that the blue goes into the cold and the red goes into the hot. Also be sure that all the arrow indicators are all pointing in the proper direction of flow.

Attach flexible hoses on the inlet and outlet water pipes. If you don't see a supply shut off valve on the cold side, I would install one, just to cover yourself. After you are sure that everything is connected back properly, open the valve to fill the tank up, while this is happening i would open up a few hot water faucets just to get some of the air out.

Put back together the gas pipes just like they were before... you might need to change it a bit, but not too much. Make sure that you use Teflon tape and pipe dope on each fitting, then tighten them back together with your pipe wrenches. Grab your manufacturer instructions to connect the gas supply tubing. After the gas is on test all your joints, making sure that there are not leaking. You can use soapy water to help with this; it will just bubble for you. Then you may need to go back and crank on them again.
