Gratitude comforts me as I sleep each night, and lifts me as I rise. For the most part, this is true of my new life, despite that it does not include my late son. Sappy--but true. It wasn't always this way...

Long about two years ago, I decided it wouldn't hurt to pick and choose a few things I could think "grateful thoughts" about. After all, by then my life had stabilized, good things and people were appearing. Heaven knows there was always others who had it worse by comparison, so why not show some thankfulness?

Though, I'll admit--it was a tough expectation, indeed, to find gratitude after loss. The two just didn't seem to go together. In fact, true, deep gratitude never made a re-appearance in my life until a year or two ago--but when it came, it came in epic proportions.

My attitude adjustment started by referring to myself as "Teflon woman." After what I'd been through--nothing could hurt me...nothing could stick, not any more.

It was a most freeing realization that no matter what else happened in my life, I could never, ever, have a worse day than that. I could safely say that that one was behind me. How many people can start every day knowing it will be fabulous? It has to be--right?

Although I do not approve of the event which brought me to deep gratitude, I found it to be a great way to start the day. I am thankful for love & laughter, friends & family. These are the things I envelope myself in; the small pleasures we find when we are willing to see.

You can go back to natural things for cleaning, but you can't control the hormones that are pumped into the meat you eat and the toxins sprayed on the fruits and vegetables. Relationship Advice: The No-Fault Spouse

It happened again today in my office.

A spouse complaining about how their partner will accept no responsibility for any of the struggles in the relationship. She brings an issue to him, and he turns it back on her, and
finds a way in which it is her fault.

It could be her bringing it to him, or him bringing it to her. The pattern is one person will never take responsibility for their own contribution to the struggles.

Are you a "teflon spouse?"

I call these folks "teflon spouses." As in, nothing sticks to them. Remember how President Reagan was sometimes referred to as the "Teflon President?" This was because with all the stuff going on around him, nothing seemed to stick. Same thing here, but in a truly negative way.

Some folks are particularly gifted at making everything the fault of someone esle. When you bring a concern or complaint to these folks, they are skilled at turning it around and making it your problem.

The problem is that it does not match reality. In 25 years of doing couples therapy and coaching, I have never seen a situation where both people did not have their fingerprints on the mess. By definiion, both partners have their own contribution to the struggle.

Now in no way am I saying that you have to take the blame for everything to be a good spouse.

I am saying that you do have to take responsibility for your part in the relationship in order to be a good spouse.

To the Point - The Importance of Needle Choice

Choosing the correct needle plays a big role in machine quilting. All too often problems like thread breakage, skipped stitches, bad tension and such, are simply the result of selecting the incorrect needle for the quilting job at hand. A bit of knowledge about needles can save a lot of strife.

At first glance, a needle appears to be a sharp thing with a hole in it for the thread. Look closer and you will see that a needle is made of much more:

o The shank is the part that goes into the machine,

o The shaft is how thick the needle is,

o There is a scarf which is a little indent in the back of the needle where the stitch is formed,

o The groove on the front hugs or protects the thread as it goes through fabric (or quilt).

Needle sizes range from 60/8, which is very fine up to 120/19, which is large and heavy duty. Remember, the lower the number the smaller the eye and the finer the needle and the higher the number the larger the eye and the thicker the needle.

Before making your needle choice you need to take into account what thread you will use (is it thick, thin, rough or smooth) and then what the needle will be pushing through (weight and type of fabric, appliqué).

If you have difficulties when machine quilting consider the following needle suggestions:

Quilting needles have a very thin point and are the best choice for general quilting.

Jeans/Denim needles are very strong needles with a very stiff shaft (for strength), a very sharp point and a slim eye. This needle is a good choice if you will be quilting through something very thick and/or appliqué pieces that have used Vliesofix to bond them to the quilt top.

Embroidery needles work with embroidery threads (i.e. rayon threads, etc.) The needle has a large eye and a specially designed scarf for these very threads.

Metafil / Metallica needles are meant for metallic threads. Choose this needle if your thread has a rough texture. Does the texture of the thread feel lumpy or bumpy? If so this needle type is the ideal choice as the eye is very large and is Teflon-coated to stop friction.

Topstitch needles are perfect for the heavier weight threads and when all else fails! This needle is extra sharp, the eye is very long and the front groove is deep. Having a very long eye means that the needle shaft is not necessarily thick and therefore does not put large holes in the quilt.

If your quilting stitches don't have a quality look about them or you have breakage, skipped stitches, tension problems, etc - it might be as simple as changing the needle you use!

Impulse Sealer Repair - Replacing the Heating Element

Just like any other machine, impulse sealers require maintenance every now and again. Although these machines seem to require less maintenance than most, the most common thing that will need to be done is to replace the heating element so you can continue to get nice crisp seals on your poly bags.

When should you replace the heating element? Typically you'll have a feel for the way your bags should be sealing and you'll just know something isn't working as well as it should. The bags may be burning through instead of getting a good seal. Or you might not be getting a seal at all. These are both pretty good signs its time to replace the heat element.

You have two options. You can send in to the place you bought it from and have them replace it for you. This is going to cost around $20 in total shipping to get it there and back, plus $25 or more in labor along with the $20 to $40 dollars in parts depending on how big your sealer is.

The other option is to replace it yourself and lucky for you this is a really simple process. The first thing you need is a heating element kit. It will consist of teflon tape, and a heating wire with eyelets attached at both ends. Once you have that, follow these simple steps:

1. There are two metal plates holding the old teflon tape in place. Each plate will have two screws in it. Completely unscrew and remove one of the plates. Loosen the other plate enough to remove the old teflon tape.

2. Now that the tape is removed, you will need to remove the screw that is holding the far end of the heating element in place. After removing the screw, simply lift the wire off its tensioning device.

3. Place the new wire over the tensioning device first and then screw down the other end tight, but don't over do it.

4. Take the new teflon tape, slide one end under the plate that you loosened, fold the tape over the sealer, press down a bit so it will stick, and screw back on the plate you removed to hold down the other end of the teflon tape.

5. Now turn on your impulse sealer, seal it down once to test it out.

Your bag sealer should be as good as new.

Lubrication For Your Table Saw's Blade Wheel Gears

One of woodworking's biggest bummers has to be a table saw with blade wheel and tilt gears that are so caked with sawdust that they become difficult to turn. Especially if you're a hobbyist who has been waiting all week to get into the wood shop to work on a project.

The problem that most woodworkers have stems from the use of "wet" or sticky grease that most table saw manufacturers use in the factory. They slather this grease on thick and it works beautifully for a time - until your blade wheel only turns with a hammer.

Some woodworkers claim that grease of this manner is never a problem, that they get years of great turning out of their blade and tilt gears lubricated just as they come from the factory. For these folks the chances are good that they are both light woodworkers - that is, they don't log many hours in the wood shop - and that they use dust collection. Which every woodworker should be doing by the way for safety purposes.

For the hobbyist with dust collection though it's still advisable to keep a close watch on those blade and tilt gears to make sure they're not gumming up too bad.

If you're having a problem with turning your gears - or want to preemptively maintain your gears with a non-sticky lubricant - you'll need to first clean off the grease and sawdust.

Read your manual first before attempting any sort of maintenance - that should always be your first guide to keeping your gears cleaned and rotating smoothly.

In addition to, or possibly following what your manual recommends you could clean off the gunk first with a rag, and then use an old toothbrush to clean off the remaining gunk and grease.

Finally - if you have it - use compressed air to really clean the gears of any remaining sawdust.

Then you've got to spend some time deciding which lubricant you're going to use.

There are a number of non-greasy, non-sticky lubricant options that tend not to attract saw dust.

Perhaps one of the most popular is simple bees wax - the kind often used for sealing toilets. Use that tooth brush and brush on a good healthy coat of wax. Paraffin wax - the kind often available at grocery stores for use in canning - is another alternative to bees wax.

Lithium grease is another popular option for lubricating your table saw gears. Lithium grease comes in two varieties - spray on and lubricant in a tube.

The spray on variety dries to a light coat and typically penetrates well and even cleans the gears a little. One issue you may find with the spray on lithium lubricant is that it doesn't leave a thick coat. This may be fine for certain applications but may not give you the ultimate in smooth turning.

The lithium grease that comes in a tube is dense like grease. Apply it liberally in a good thick coat to achieve the levels of smoothness and motion that you're used to in brand new machines.

Another popular lubricant found at most bike stores is spray-on graphite lube. It dries to a nice powder that doesn't collect dust, though doesn't give you the density of application that lithium grease does.

One expensive and highly-lubricating alternative is AntiSeize cpd, found in auto supply stores and used on spark plugs. This metal-added lubricant sticks in a manner similar to paint and works extremely well at high temperatures. It's more expensive but like the other lubricants mentioned does not attract dust.

Other Lubrication Points for Your Table Saw
The bed of your table saw needs regular maintenance too. Scrub it off regularly and spray it with a teflon based dry lubricant to keep the wood from binding.

Consider lubricating your saw blades as well with a Blade Lubricant Stick. The oils and waxes in the stick make your blade cut more cleanly through your projects and helps extend the life of your blade.

Bearing lubricant is another important lube to investigate for your table saw - a good, penetrating lubricant that will protect and seal the bearing's inner workings and extend the overall life of your saw.

Chemicals in Body Form Grease Proof Wrappings

Next time you're ordering from a favorite fast food place, or tossing some popcorn in the microwave, think about this... the chemicals that are used to make food wrappers like grease-proof paper have also been found, for the first time ever, someplace you might not like - in human blood.

This according to startling new research in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, the latest in a series of studies that date back to the late 1990s on compounds known as perfluorochemicals or PFCs for short.

And since we're abbreviating, there's PFOA (perfuorooctanoic acid) a rather worrisome member of this family; PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) is another. Finally diPAP (polfluoroalkyl phosphoric acid diesters) is the compound that keeps the wrapper around your food from getting greasy.

Scott Mabury, a chemist at the University of Toronto and his team, wanted to learn more about the as-yet-unstudied precursor to PFOA, diPAP, a chemical used to make fast food wrappers resist grease.

He suspected these substances were leaking from the wrappers into the food, and it turns out he was right.

These chemicals aren't sold commercially, rather they're products or aids to processing used to make other things.

Both PFOA and PFOS resist oil and water, so they're ideal as linings for carpets as well as the coating on non-stick pans, but you'll also find them in our clothes and electronics, and in food packaging like microwave popcorn bags and pizza boxes. They are used by the biggest brands like Teflon, Stainmaster, Scotchgard and Gore-Tex.

The team used a very sensitive, half million dollar mass spectrometer to look at 20 pooled blood samples, collected all across the Midwestern U.S. of both men and women ranging in age from 19 to 70 years old.

Each pooled sample was made up of ten different blood donors. The first ten collected during 2004-2005, another ten in 2008.

Surprisingly, the team saw levels of diPAPs in the samples, even though they'd expected this compound to break down quickly and be undetected - yet it was at the same high levels as PFOA.

The researchers also analyzed extracts from six sewage sludge samples that had been collected in waste treatment plants in Canada during 2007.

These samples also contained high levels of diPAPs, which suggests the compound is already in drinking water and farms.

Animals, even those in locations as remote at the Artic, too have levels of these compounds in their blood.

The team suspects that diPAPs might be contributing to as much as 10% of the PFOA in our own bloodstream. What's more, the other steps in the breakdown process can bring forth molecules that have been shown in studies to be ten thousand times more toxic than PFOA.

"The take-home message is that some chemicals that make our lives easier, better and more satisfying end up in our bloodstream with unknown toxicological consequences," warns study co-author Mabury.

He also points out that, "The diPAPs occur at levels in human blood that are comparable to PFOA. We know diPAPs don't last long in the body, so this suggests an important and fairly constant source."

When little-understood compounds like these end up in our food and our environment they're able to enter our bodies, our drinking water and the bodies of other animals, even those very far removed from our civilized world, like Polar bears in the Artic harbor.

So far, perfluorochemicals have been found in every human blood sample tested, and at pretty high levels too. In animal studies PFOA and PFOS have been tied to developmental problems, cancer and other.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has convinced American manufacturers to stop using PFOS, and has encouraged other firms to find alternatives and cut emissions of PFOA, as well as many of the super dangerous precursor molecules.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration studies show that diPAPs and other such chemicals can migrate in to some foods at levels that are several hundred times higher than the currently approved guidelines.

No one, so far, has studied the health effects in people of exposure to the grease reducing chemicals, or the by products of these substances.

Until more is know, your best bet is to limit your exposure as much as possible to plastic packaging wherever possible to avoid chemicals in body building up.

Hot Stamping Foil Adhesion

Hot stamping foil adhesion is measured in a number of different ways, and there is a lot of misconception about what each test really measures. Take the simple scratch test for example. Is that a definitive adhesion test or simply a measure of the hardness of one's fingernail?

In fact, most adhesion tests carried out are comparative rather than a true measure. If you have two foils on the same substrate, both blocked at the same time, then you can test their comparative resistance to your fingernail, assuming that you do not subconsciously scratch harder on that you want to fail. This is more common than you might think, which is why a true scientific measure of adhesion is preferred.

However, such measurements are rare, and there is nothing that could realistically be routinely carried out by a trade blocker or printer. Even a rub or abrasion tester is not testing adhesion as much as the hardness of the foil surface. The so-called 'Scotch tape' test is generally the most widely used, but there are so many variables involved, that again this is normally not definitive unless exactly the same tape is used each time.

Apart from the adhesion of the foil itself, the amount of wax release applied can significantly affect the adhesion and abrasion resistance of a hot stamping foil as it is tested. Hot foil can be made using a wide variety of waxes, and is not present in the form of a coherent separate layer. The wax layer is generally applied by direct gravure, and is only around 0.005 gsm (grams per square metre) when dry.

The solvents used in the subsequent lacquer or top coat are generally fairly aggressive, and even though tend not to dissolve the wax when cold, will invariable strike through the wax layer immediately on coating, and also in the drying tunnel. The result is a wax rich resin layer at the carrier film interface (usually polyester) that becomes progressively more wax deficient the deeper into the lacquer layer - i.e. the further the distance from the polyester where the wax layer was originally applied, the less wax will be intermixed with the resin.

After blocking, the wax in the resin tends to rise to the surface. Although some wax will be at the surface of the foil immediately on hot stamping, this will increase with time as it migrates through the lacquer layer to the surface. Hence, abrasion resistance improves with time and your test results will therefore vary according to how long after blocking you test the foil.

The same could be true of the Scotch tape test: the surface will become increasing less receptive to the tape as the wax concentration increases. What you are measuring, then, is the adhesion of the tape to the wax-rich surface relative to the adhesion of the hot foil to the substrate it is blocked to.

There is in fact a lot more to it than just that, but it indicates that what you might have thought was a simple test is, in fact, not so straightforward. There are several other properties of a hot stamping that affect its perceived adhesion, too many to discuss in this article. However the principles involved are interesting and worth finding out because they can shed light on some of the problems you might have encountered on your press.

Sometimes understanding why a problem occurs can give you an idea of the solution. However, I will finish of with a few questions that have little to do with solutions but more to do with the testing itself. How many people go around testing their greetings cards or wine labels with a piece of sticky tape? Is your testing related to the end use of the foiled article, or carried out only because it is in the testing specification?

Good hot stamping foil adhesion is frequently needed, but would you sacrifice performance and speed in order to use a hot foil that stands up well to a piece of sticky tape after foil blocking?
