Applying Teflon to Your Carpet

Teflon is a product manufactured by the DuPont Corporation. This product bonds to the carpet fiber preventing liquids, dirt and debris from penetrating. Dirt stains left untreated quickly embed in the carpet fiber. Teflon keeps the dirt from adhering to the fibers, making the clean-up process much easier. Therefore, your carpet will look better and last much longer. Teflon will work on the majority of carpet fibers including wool.

In order for the Teflon process to work properly the carpet must be prepared for the application process. The two types of treatments are oil based and non oil based treatments. Teflon also needs to be worked into the carpet by using a pile brush for pile types and a rake for shag applications. The result will be the same, but the application and preparation process are different.

Preparation.

First, the carpet must be cleaned to remove any dirt, grease or debris. If the carpet has not been cleaned the Teflon will not adhere correctly. Therefore, the product may not work as well. There are many different types of carpet cleaning methods to choose from. The most recommended way to clean carpet for a Teflon application is hot water extraction. This process actually sprays a hot water solution onto the surface of the carpet and is vacuumed up shortly after. Hot water extraction equipment is usually very powerful and can remove the majority of stains and carpet soil allowing the Teflon to adhere. Teflon can be applied to wet or dry carpet. Dry carpet is recommended.

Application.

Teflon can be applied many different ways.  You can apply Teflon on your own, using a pump sprayer. A good pump sprayer can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowes. They will have a nice selection to choose from. The cheaper sprayers have plastic nozzles and tend to leak more often and the spray pattern is not as precise. When applying Teflon, a precise flow of solution is important. Be sure to read the directions on any chemical treatment. The latest Teflon treatments on the market today have no odor and safe to use. Pour the Teflon solution into the pump sprayer and pump several times. Do not over pump the sprayer! This is a hazard and can cause the sprayer to rupture. You want a wide spray pattern when applying Teflon. Once the spray pattern is set you can begin to apply the solution. Hold the spray nozzle 7-8 inches from the carpet surface and spray evenly from one corner of the room to the other. Continue this process until the room has an even coat of Teflon. You can use a pile brush to work the solution into the carpet fibers. A pile brush can be purchased at a carpet supply company. Be sure not to brush with too much force or the carpet fibers can be damaged. See the Teflon instructions on the drying time.

How Safe Are Teflon and Other Fluoropolymer Coatings?

Teflon® was discovered nearly 70 years ago and has been used safely on cookware for over 40 years. Teflon® has been used since the 1940's on automotive, military, personal use, and industrial products. Many Teflon® and other fluoropolymer coatings are permitted for use in contact with food in compliance with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and applicable regulations, including 21 CFR 175,300.

There is one known health hazard associated with Teflon, inhalation of fumes produced during degradation of the coating. Temporary flue-like symptoms (known as polymer fume fever) can occur when the fumes from overheated fluoropolymers are inhaled. Typically the fluoropolymer coating would have to be heated to an excess of 500°F to begin to deteriorate. Fumes are not typically given off until the fluoropolymer significantly decomposes (660°F). Fats, butter, and cooking oil tend to scorch and smoke at only 400°F. When used properly Teflon® non-stick products are safe.

DuPont states "Teflon® cookware is formulated and quality tested to resist peeling or chipping, which will only occur if cookware is misused. However, in the event that particles from Teflon® cookware are accidentally eaten, there is no danger. These particles are non-toxic. If eaten, they pass directly through the body and are not absorbed. The FDA has stated that eating Teflon® particles does not pose a health hazard".

In another matter, for the past six years the EPA and industry have been studying PFOA to determine what if any human health effects exist. PFOA is a polymerization aid, not an ingredient, used to help make fluoropolymers. It is largely removed during the final steps of polymer production and by the high temperatures used when most fluoropolymers are made into finished products. The EPA has said, "Although our risk assessment activities are not complete and new data may change the current picture, to date EPA is not aware of any studies specifically relating current levels of PFOA exposure to human health effects". The EPA has also stated "At the present time, EPA does not believe there is any reason for consumers to stop using any products because of concerns about PFOA".

Over the past six years there have been rumors, misconceptions, and unsubstantiated claims regarding PFOA, its safety, and its effect on Teflon® and other fluoropolymer coatings. In order to reduce concerns related to PFOA, industry has improved manufacturing processes and controls to reduce the use and emissions of PFOA. The EPA and industry have a stated goal of virtually eliminating the release of PFOA into the environment by 2015.

An Awning Can Give An Extra Outdoor Room

An awning is a secondary covering attached to the exterior wall of a building and it add color and brightness to a place. The aluminum awning is rust-proof and is suitable even for light snow-loads. The time of the year when you have snow, it can be great to have an outdoor room thanks to an awning. Most awnings are of course used to protect from sunlight.

Measuring the width and the projection for your awning is simple. An awning is comprised of a lightweight frame structure over which a cover is attached. When you are looking for awnings, make sure the one of your choice is UV rated. Sunshine will in the long run make the colours fade and the fabric will start to crack. The awning should also be wind resistant, as much as one can expect. For natures long term stress on awnings choose one that is designed to stand wind, water and snow. You should insist on fire retardant material/paint. Also, check with your insurance provider to make sure your awning is covered in the event of any damage.

In many instances, a prefabricated awning is actually a sound and solid choice. These awnings are heavy and expensive, therefore make sure that your awning is always secured while lifting it into the brackets. The most common, and least expensive, method to open and close a retractable awning is with a hand crank on a long rod. But, most people and companies prefer the motorized method.

A great benefit of most awnings is the ability to retract it when not in use. The size of an awning is determined by its length, width and projection from the building to which it is attached. Roll-out awnings are best put away in severe conditions, this does not mean to say a freestanding awning is bomb proof. If it is full weather protection for an outdoor space, or you want to create an outdoor room, a fixed-frame awning is the better choice.

Generally the fabric used for a patio awning is a teflon coated fabric which protects against the elements and is treated with an anti-mildew coating. Wind and water happen to be its worst enemies. Therefore is a retractable awning cover an additional protection when your awning is rolled up.

The installation of most awnings are relatively easy. However, if you prefer not to manage the window or patio awning installation yourself, simply find a local handyman, carpenter or awning installer. The cleaning for removing mildew and stains is fairly easy. Use a mild soap and a soft brush.

These products are a valuable addition to any backyard deck or patio, outdoor eating area or porch area. Why not turn your patio into a cosy outdoor living room during warm summer evenings by installing a suns setter awning. With a patio awning, you have shade for grilling out on the weekend. Make the most of your patio come rain or shine. Extend your outdoor living areas and keep your house cool by installing a custom made patio awning to your pergola. Patio covers gives you sun when when you want it and shade when you need it.

How To Season Your Cast Iron Pan

Once you make the decision to buy and use a cast iron pan, maintenance is very important.

Unlike Teflon coated non-stick frying pans, cast iron pans (at least skillets and griddles) need a high degree of tender loving care. However, once your pan has been used a few times, it will develop its own non-stick surface, and will last you much longer than a conventional frying pan or dutch oven/casserole dish.

However, before you get started with using the pan, you can do some artificial seasoning of it. The following steps outline this process, and the video on the right will show you a slightly different approach.

Seasoning your pan

Remove all packaging from your new cast iron pan
Wash the pan down in warm, detergent free water. Do not use any metal/wire wool on the man, just a sponge or brush is sufficient
Take a small knob of butter and rub it all over the inside of the pan
Heat up your oven as high as it will go
Place your pan upside down on a shelf, ensuring there is something to catch the drips from the butter
After several minutes, take out the pan, let it cool, and reapply the butter and repeat the process

Cleaning your pan

When you come to wash the pan, let it cool slightly before rinsing it under hot water and scrubbing with a sponge or brush. Do not use a metal scourer/wire wool, and make sure the pan is not straight off the ring or out of the oven before putting it under water (it could crack).

You can let the pan dry naturally, or pat it dry with a cloth or towel. Again, do not scrub it dry, as the seasoning will be lost.

Never put your pan in a dishwasher!

You will undo all of your hard work from seasoning the pan, and potentially ruin it forever (the salts from the dishwasher tablets do not play nicely with the iron pans).

Finally, one important thing to bear in mind with your cookware is that these pans really will last you a long, long time provided that you look after them. There is much to be said for modern, Teflon style non-stick pans, but if you truly want the feel of authentic cooking, then you should look no further than a well seasoned, good quality and reliable cast iron pan.

Unclogging a Showerhead

If your shower water pressure is not what it used to be it could be one of several problems, however it is most likely a clog in the showerhead itself.

In the showerhead unit, there is a small filter screen. This filter screen is meant to prevent small particles of sediment from clogging the tiny shower holes in the showerhead assembly. However, if you have noticed the showerhead water pressure has slowly diminished overtime; chances are the filter is clogged.

To unclog the showerhead you first need to unscrew the shower head from the shower pipe. Use a crescent wrench to unscrew the clogged showerhead.

Once you have unscrewed the clogged showerhead, you will find a small filter that sits just inside the showerhead. Using either your fingers or a small set of pliers (e.g. Needle Nose pliers) remove the filter screen from the showerhead.

If you see sediment on the filter screen rinse it off thoroughly. Then reinsert the filter screen back into the showerhead.

Next, if there is old plumbing tape (Teflon tape) on the shower pipe, remove it.

Wrap new plumbing tape around the pipe and then screw on the showerhead. Note: When applying the Teflon tape, wrap it around the pipe in the same direction that the showerhead will be tightened.

Tighten the shower head with a crest wrench just so it is snug.

Turn the shower on and observe if there is a significant improvement in the showerhead water pressure.

If you don't see a marked improvement in your showerhead water pressure, you could still have one of several problems. It may be that the showerhead holes are clogged. If this is the case, then you will need to remove the showerhead again and soak it in a vinegar water mixture to dissolve away any build up in the holes.

If you notice that your water pressure is low in your entire home then you may have a problem with you well pump or water holding tank. If this is the case, you will need to call a plumber.

Menu Planning Ideas For Camping

Before you set off on your great outdoor adventure, ask yourself, what's good to eat? There are many considerations before selecting a menu for you and your camping buddies, such as the number of people around, number of meals that need to be cooked, location and available facilities, et cetera.

The easiest types of food to bring are in cans, such as beans and soups. Not much preparation is needed, just enough heating. You can also bring along a cooler to stuff in your meat products, like pork chops, steaks, hot dogs, chicken, and sausages. Since you will be cooking by the fire, it would also be great to roast vegetables like corn and potatoes. If you will be out for longer, you will need sustainable energy sources, consider adding rice to your menu while camping. Fish is also easy to cook while camping, as long as you know how to clean the fish properly. But if not, you can always purchase filleted fish from your market.

Among the most important things to have with you as you go camping, aside from the above mentioned smart menu plan and the essential gear, is a reliable set of camping cookware. One of the most common types of camping cookware you can find in the market is cast iron, and there are tons of benefits to selecting this as your gear for cooking.

A lot of people presented with this suggestion often ask, why choose cast iron cookware? For one thing, cast iron is very heavy duty, and you won't have to fret about dings and dents whenever you drop them. The surface is also scratch resistant, and can retain heat longer, so cooking over a fire is faster. Cast iron is highly recommended because of even distribution of heat, so foods cook evenly on all sides. Plus, even if they are not made of Teflon, cast iron cookware is very easy to clean.

Planning menus for camping is easy. Be sure to keep in mind the weather. If it's cool in the evenings and mornings, most people will enjoy a hot meal and drink. If it's hot during the day, a simple meal of hot dogs for lunch will be enjoyed. Pancakes are always loved by kids as are grilled cheese sandwiches cooked to perfection in a cast-iron sandwich maker. Soup is simple for a quick meal. Just open the can and dump it into a pan to warm up.

Keep in mind the time you'll have available for clean up. Don't plan a big meal if you won't have enough time afterward to clean up. Bears like food, so if your scraps are hanging around while you're out on a hike, you might get some unwelcome camp food raiders! Think ahead and you'll have a fantastic time eating and camping!

Ten Facts About Fabric Tensile Structures

Tensile structures are increasingly used as a means of protection against the weather in publicly used spaces. This is because such structures can span large distances and can be aesthetically pleasing. Wikipedia defines a tensile structure as "a construction of elements carrying only tension and no compression or bending". This article is designed to give you some based knowledge about the use of fabric in such structures. Tensile structures are generally supported by some form of compression or bending elements (for example the masts in The O2, formerly the Millennium Dome).

1. Why use fabric in tensile structures?

Fabric can facilitates greater spans than conventional building materials, with a minimal supporting structure. Greater translucency and dynamic, organic shapes bring the feeling of the outside inside. They also provide shade and protection from the weather.

2. Is it cost effective?

If you compare it with concrete and steel construction, there is an economy of cost per square metre, strength and longevity with fabric. The main cost saving comes with a reduced installation time. This is because the support structure and fabric membrane is pre-fabricated and assembled on site.

3. What is tension?

Tension is the force used to pull the molecular structure of a material apart. It is the most efficient way of using any material because it utilises the whole cross section at maximum efficiency rather than just the material at the extremes of the cross sectional form (fro example, as in bending and compression loads).

4. What is a tensioned fabric structure?

True tensile fabric structures are those in which every part of the fabric is in tension. The fundamental rule for stability is that, a tensioned fabric structure must curve equally in opposite directions; this gives the canopy its 3-dimensional stability.

5. How is a 3-diemnsional form achieved?

The complex 3-dimensional form of a canopy is achieved not by elastic fabric, but by cutting the fabric and bonding it together to make its final 3-dimensional shape. The fabric is loaded during the installation process. This is called pre-tension or pre stress. Pre-tension is the most efficient way of resisting live loads such as snow, wind etc.

6. Can a fabric structure cope with the weight of snow or heavy weather?

A tensile fabric structure, once it is tensioned, can take a large amount of applied weight and the fabric is extraordinarily tight. If something is thrown onto the fabric, it will bounce off. Fabric structures have been built in typhoon and tornado zones.

7. Is the fabric elastic?

The fabric used in tensile structures is not stretchy or elastic in nature. It will not balloon under wind loads and settle under snow. A typical structural external fabric has a tensile strength of 10 tonnes per linear metre and will creep no more than a few percent after 20 years of extreme conditions.

8. Will the fabric stretch over time?

Fabric, being flexible and normally woven, is a 'live' medium that stretches across the diagonal plain to a greater extent than in the direction of the weave, this can be most easily seen with a piece of netting. Certain fabrics can also have more stretch in one direction than in the other. This is due to the threads of the weft being woven in and out of the warp threads, which are already tightened.

9. What types of fabric can be used?

There are many different fabrics with various features and benefits to each one, however there are three basic external fabric types most commonly used in tensile fabric structures. External fabrics such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride) coated polyester; silicon coated glass; and Teflon coated glass P.T.F.E. (polytetrafluroethylene). They have different benefits in terms of cost and durability. PVC coated polyester is the least expensive and has a design life of 15 to 20 years. Silicone coated glass cloth and Teflon coated fabric has a higher tensile strength than PVC coated polyester, but is slightly more brittle.

10. Are all fabrics fire retardant?

All types of fabric can be used if suitably fire retardant. The most commonly used is PVC coated glass cloth due to its easy maintenance and very good fire resistance. Untreated cotton can be used which will burn out in a flash and will not drop hot plastics on anyone below. Lycra materials can be used for awkward or ad-hoc shapes.

Connecting Gas Lines Made Easy

Connecting your gas oven or gas clothes dryer may seem pretty straight forward, but selecting the correct fitting can make the difference between a functioning gas line, and a potential fire hazard within your home. Before attempting to connect your gas lines, be sure to check with your local building inspector to see if you are allowed to do this job yourself, or if you are required by law to have a licensed contractor connect your gas lines.

You can find kits available at your local home center, or hardware store. The kits have several kinds of fittings that will adapt to your gas lines. Even with these kits you may need to purchase additional pieces that are specific to your needs.

There are two basic types of existing pipes that you are possibly going to be connecting to. Below you will find instructions on how to properly connect your gas oven or gas clothes dryer to each of these pipes.

Steel pipe

In many older homes you will find that the appliance is connected directly to the gas line with a steel pipe. You are going to want to exchange the connecting steel pipe for a flexible stainless steel tube. Since you cannot connect the flare fitting that came with the flexible stainless steel tube directly to the steel pipe threads, you are going to have to buy a flare fitting that fits not only your flexible stainless steel tube, but also threads correctly to your steel pipe. You may need to use a standard bushing reducer to connect your 1/2 inch flexible stainless steel tube, to your 3/4 inch pipe. Be sure to take this time to replace your ball joint valve. The cost to replace this part is minimal, and having this part fail could be dangerous. Be sure to coat all pipe threads with pipe threading compound.

Soft copper

When connecting to soft copper you have to "flare" The existing copper tubing with a special tool that is made for the job. You will need to flare the tubing to match exactly with the size of your flare fittings. The standard size is 1/2 inch. Be sure that you have the flare nut on the copper tubing before you flare the tubing, or you will have to cut off the flared end to insert the nut. When working with copper tubing be sure that you are careful not to kink the tubing. Once again you will need to use threading compound, and Teflon tape. Flared connections effectiveness depends heavily upon using these items correctly.

Be sure to check for leaks once all of your connections have been made. To properly check for leaks apply a simple solution of water and dishwashing liquid to all of your connections. Look for bubbles. Bubbles will indicate the location of the leak. Once a leak is found immediately shut off your gas, and refit the connection.

Hydrofluoric Acid Burns and Injuries

Hydrofluoric acid is a combination of hydrogen fluoride in water. It is a weak, comparatively speaking, acid. Unfortunately, as it is still an acid, hydrofluoric acid can still cause serious burns. Hydrofluoric acid is a valued source of fluorine which is important to many pharmaceuticals, like Prozac, and diverse plastics, like Teflon. Hydrofluoric acid is known best to the general public for its ability to dissolve glass by reacting to Silicon Dioxide which is a major component in most glasses.

Despite its relatively weak status on the acid scale, hydrofluoric acid is still an extremely hazardous liquid that is capable of causing damage to humans. It can cause severe skin and eye irritation in mild injuries. More serious injuries from hydrofluoric acid include deep-seated, slow-to-heal burns. In some of the most severe cases, exposure can be fatal to the person. Whenever a person is exposed to hydrofluoric acid, immediate paramedic assistance is necessary.

Hydrofluoric acid is particularly dangerous because it binds calcium. Calcium is a major component of the majority of the body's skin and other cells. This process occurs whenever HF makes contact with the body. A big difference between HF acid and other acids is the time it takes to neutralize the acid. The majority of acids are rapidly neutralized by the body's natural defenses and water in the body tissues. Unfortunately, HF takes a long time. It can take days for HF to become fully neutralized.

Because it takes so long for HF to be neutralized, tissue destruction can continue for days as well. As it binds calcium, it is even more dangerous. Calcium is necessary for all cell life and so when it is bound, it causes rapid cell death. When exposure is extensive, excessive amounts of calcium can be made in active. In addition, inadequate amounts of calcium will be made unavailable for vital body functions.

When treating an HF acid burn, it is important to tell the physician what the nature of the chemical involved in the exposure was. It is also helpful to provide a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) to the doctor. These sheets will tell a doctor or nurse all of the relevant information concerning the acid or other chemical. Any lab using chemicals should have the MSDS sheets for all chemicals present in the lab.

When treating burns and other injuries from chemicals, it is very important to receive proper treatment for the burns. For more information on treating chemical burns and other ailments, please visit http://burnvictiminjurylawyers.com/burn_injury_lawyer_articles.aspx.

How to Cook a Sunny-Side Up Egg Using an Egg Ring

Who wouldn't love having breakfast with a cup of coffee, a toast, and a perfectly rounded shaped sunny side up egg? Eggs are considered very healthy and are prepared and cooked in many ways. And one of these is cooking it "sunny-side up" style; which means the egg is cooked directly on the pan preserving the round yellow yolk with the egg white, looking like the sun in all its shining glory. However, cooking an egg this way requires a lot of practice and attention especially when you want your egg to be perfectly round. But for those people who do not have time to practice and learn this artistic method, a simple utensil will aide you achieve the perfect rounded sunny-side up egg called the egg ring.

The egg ring is a simple utensil made of silicone or Teflon-coated aluminum ring where you will put the egg preserving its perfectly round shape when cooking

Here are the steps in cooking a sunny-side up egg using an egg ring:

1. Preheat the pan in low flame with a little coating of vegetable oil. Be sure not to overheat the pan to avoid charring. In order to tell if the temperature is at its optimum level, sprinkle a drop of water on the pan and see if it immediately sizzles and evaporates. If it does, the pan is hot enough to cook the egg properly.

2. Keep the heat on low level. Break the egg carefully with the one edge of a spoon/fork and place it right inside the egg ring.

3. Let it sit for around 3-5 minutes in low flame or heat or until you achieve the desired consistency of the yolk. Use a pan cover in order to circulate the heat inside the pan to ensure the top part of the egg is cooked.

4. If you want the yellow part of the egg to be "nicely done," cook the egg for around 3-5 minutes then flip the egg carefully to cook the other side for around a minute or two.

5. Remove the pan from the heat source, then remove the egg ring using its handle and serve your hot perfectly round sunny-side up egg together with a toast and a hot cup of coffee and enjoy a healthy breakfast.

Tips:

1. Always keep the flame on low setting in order to avoid over-cooking or charring the egg.

2. Use a wide non-stick Teflon-coated frying pan and spatula in order to flip the egg easily without deforming the egg. You could also cook 2-3 eggs simultaneously.

3. You can also use butter for an extra yummy taste

Stainless Waterless Cookware - A Natural Choice

Today, with more and more people turning to natural and "green" ways stainless waterless cookware is becoming more popular than ever before. Waterless cooking allows food to retain the natural flavors; vitamins and nutrients lost to regular cooking and can even use fewer resources like electricity. All of this makes it the best choice for a "green" and healthier way to cook.

What does waterless cooking mean?

Stainless waterless cookware is specially designed to allow you to cook your food without diluting it with added water. This style of cooking will result in food that tastes better, looks better and is rich in all the vitamins and nutrients traditional cooking can reduce.

Why Use Waterless Cookware

Although important, the flavor of food is not the only consideration when creating meals. Every good chef understands that smell, texture, color and presentation are just as important as how the meal tastes. Waterless cookware allows not just the real flavor of the meal to come through but also the color, texture and smells of the food are enhanced and not diluted.

Another important consideration for many of us is the nutrition of the food we eat. The two things that affect the nutrition of our food is the quality of the food we buy and the way it is prepared.

Even when we buy the best food we can, most of the vitamins and nutrients end up being washed down the kitchen sink. That is because the way we cook tends to leach 70% to 90% of the vitamins and minerals out of the food, leaving it in the pan along with the water in which we cooked the food. Waterless cookware allows the retention of over 90% of the nutritional value of the food.

Let us take broccoli as an example. Broccoli when over cooked in water is limp, lifeless, and tasteless, unfortunately when overcooked broccoli also loses as many as 70% of the vitamins and nutrients that make it healthy for you to eat. With waterless cookware broccoli retains 93% of the vitamins and minerals.

Waterless cookware is designed to cook food at a lower temperature in its own juices. Broccoli cooked in this type of cookware will come out of the pan crisp, bright colored, filled with all the vitamins, minerals, and flavor it had before cooking.

Vegetables are not the only foods that benefit from waterless cooking, even steaks and roasts come out with a full robust flavor and retaining all of the nutritional values without the added oils that are so bad for you.

How does waterless cookware work?

Waterless cookware is made up of several layers of material including a bottom layer of aluminum or copper, stainless steel, and iron with a moisture seal lid.
As the food inside the pot heats, the water or fat from the food begins to evaporate. The evaporation triggers the lid of the cookware's seal, which traps the steam. Once enough steam is trapped inside the pot the steam valve will open and begin to whistle telling you to either turn down the heat or turn off the stove. The steam built up inside of the pot will continue to cook the food until it is done.

Why stainless waterless cookware?

The three biggest reasons to use stainless steel waterless cookware are safety, durability and economy.

Safety

Many cookware products today are coated with Teflon. Teflon is a chemical that creates a non-stick surface. While a non- stick surface can seem like a great idea, Teflon breaks down and releases toxic gases and chemicals when heated. The key chemical in Teflon is called C-8. According to DuPont (the maker of Teflon), you should not keep pet birds in the kitchen because the fumes of C-8 could kill them. For humans Teflon is supposed to be safe but may cause flu-like symptoms that will only last a few days. Stainless steel cookware is not coated with Teflon.

Durability

If you are looking for a set of cookware that will last a lifetime stainless steel is the best way to go. While stainless steel cookware can cost a little more than some other materials stainless steel is usually guaranteed to last for a lifetime making it a much better value. Most pots and pans should be replaced every 5 years.

Economy

Stainless steel waterless cookware is also a more economic choice. Due in part to the materials used in waterless cookware the food will do most of its cooking with the stove turned off. The ability to turn of the stove will not only save money on your utility bill but also releases less heat into the air, an important consideration for the Summer months when air conditioners are so important.

Stainless waterless cookware offers a non-stick way to cook food that is natural, flavorful, and loaded with all of the vitamins and minerals often leached out during cooking with other types of cookware.

Install and Repair Toilet Bowl - DIY

As the toilet bowl is one of the most used sanitary ware in the home, it is often necessary to repair it from time to time. Two common parts which require attention are: toilet tank & toilet bowl. With a bit of knowledge and hand work, it is possible for you to DiY the repair works. Below are some tips on how to do that yourself.

Toilet Bowl Repairs

When the seal at the base gets defective due to age, it starts leaking at its base. Before repairing, you must turn off the water supply and remove it only when the system is dry. After removing it, clean the old joint & pipe. Subsequently, fixed back and seal it carefully and thoroughly. After all this, if there is still water leakage, most likely the porcelain has cracked. In this situation, you can't repair and have to replace the toilet bowl.

Toilet Tank Repair

One of the most common problems is that water keeps running constantly. There may be a leak in the toilet tank. Test it by adding some food colouring into the water and see if the coloured water gets into the toilet bowl. If it does, it means it is leaking.

Before replacement of the parts, see if you can remedied by adjusting the length of the lever wire or the positioning of the toilet tank ball. However, if these steps don't help, you will need to replace the parts in the toilet tank.

Installing the New Toilet

Installing a new toilet bowl requires a bit more work. First, remove the old shut-off valve and use a Teflon tape to wrap around the pipe. Next, screw the new shut-off valve and install the wax ring or flexible ring after flipping the toilet bowl.

You will now need to set the bowl in place, ensuring that it is fitted properly. After that, screw the bolt through the base to the floor. Avoid over tightening the screw as cracks may occur on the porcelain. Put a small amount of plumber's putty inside the bolt caps to seal properly. Remember to wrap Teflon tape around the shut-off valve.

With the help of bolts, nuts and washers, attached the toilet tank to the bowl and tighten the flexible connector to the toilet tank. Flapper and handle inside the toilet tank must be connected to the chain. Now, it's time to start the water supply and turn off the shut-off valve to let water inside the toilet bowl.

Most importantly, remember to check for any water leakages. With the right tools, time and patience, you can resolve your toilet bowl repair and installation problems. However, if you lack time and don't want the hassle, you can always engage a professional Singapore plumber for help!

Selecting High Quality Cookware is Not As Easy As it Seems

Growing up, you were very likely familiar with the cookware your mother used, featuring all manner of aluminum dishes and other various items. But when it comes right down to it, picking out the proper cookware for your needs can be somewhat difficult. There are so many different types of steel cookware, aluminum cookware and Teflon coated items available that it can be an insurmountable task choosing what cookware is right for you.

In fact, there are so many different types of kitchenware and bake ware that it can be confusing just deciding which type of product is suitable for which type of food that you have in mind. With different types of food come different types of food preparation and different types of requirements for the cookware being utilized for that particular food product. Nearly every type of food product requires a different type of cookware, some of which are somewhat esoteric and difficult to choose from.

In the case of the bachelor or the uninitiated into the ways of the preparing food, it can be almost impossible to choose the proper items. Lacking experience in this area certainly will not help you in your quest to choose the proper cookware. The best rule of thumb when stocking your home is to decide what types of food you cook the most. In the case of many foods, the old black skillet is more than acceptable.

You're very likely familiar with the food your grandmother made, most of which was done using the time honored black frying skillet. With some of the newer, more modern dishes that are healthier and take less preparation, the various steel or Teflon coated items are somewhat more suitable. In some cases, it comes down to personal choice, but in the case of frying foods and sauces, it is important to have a variety of products in order to cover all the bases, as you never know what you might be required to cook at a moments notice.

Naturally, getting past the frying pans and into pots, the going gets a little more difficult. There are so many different types of dishes available that it can become confusing almost immediately. There are large types for boiling, small types for sauces and medium styles that are literally called medium pots. Choosing between all the different types of available styles depends on you deciding on several things. First and foremost, your budget comes to mind.

Some of these different types of products are extraordinarily expensive and can put a huge dent in your budget, while other types of house wares can be so cheaply constructed as to be almost useless. Choosing between these types of products can be difficult for the uninitiated and inexperienced cook.

In the case of those who are completely clueless, it can be a good idea to take along someone who is somewhat more knowledgeable in the area of food and dishes in general. It's not unheard of to take your mother or sister or even a girlfriend to the store to find the type of cookware that suits you. With all the assistance that this more experienced individual can render, it only makes sense to have some help finding the products that you need.

In the end, it likely comes down to personal taste, budget and what types of foods that you'll be preparing. But when picking up your cookware, always keep in mind that certain products are going to be easier to clean than others.

With all the different steel and Teflon coated options, this is a very important part of the shopping process, as you don't want to get stuck with cookware that is almost impossible to clean. With all of these different types of coatings and products available in the cookware department in your local department store, it is no surprise that so many people have so many difficulties picking out some basic dishes and other items.

What is Calphalon Cookware?

Calphalon cookware is a specific name brand of various cookware products that is owned by the larger company of Newell Rubbermaid. It is well known for its non-stick surfaces that are unusual because they are made of anodized aluminum as opposed to Teflon, which if far more common a coating substance for non-stick pans. Calphalon cookware has increased in popularity, and the appeal of a no-stick frying pan is doubly attractive to those cooks who especially like to fry.

You might hear a lot of this type of cookware referred to as "hard-anodization" cookware. That phrase "hard-anodization" refers to the electro-chemical process the company uses to harden the aluminum that they use to make their cookware. Through the use of chemicals and electric pulses, the aluminum used for Calphalon becomes far harder than ordinary aluminum, allowing the material to be used for cooking. This treatment also makes the surface of the cookware resistant to damage through abrasion or corrosion. In theory, a piece of this cookware that has gone through the hard-anodization process will be one of the most durable pans you can possibly buy.

If the process worries you, lay your fears to rest. The cookware goes through this anodization process is stable, so there will never be any chemicals or anything harmful coming off the pan into the food. There is nothing toxic, and high heat will not damage the finish or the pan. One of the most important parts of this process, which is also a major selling point for this cookware, is that the hard anodizing makes the surfaces smooth by eliminating the tiny pores that most other cookware has. This is what makes these pans non-stick.

Even though Calphalon cookware is designed to be non-stick, no cookware is perfect in that regards, so there are still several steps that need to be taken in order to ensure maximizing the no stick properties. One action that helps is to make sure to take some of the chill out of refrigerated foods before cooking. Usually leaving food out for as little as ten to fifteen minutes can be enough. Another important factor is to preheat pans over medium heat, not high. Aluminum conducts heat very well, so warming it on high will make the pan too hot, because it will not cool down after you turn the burner down. As little as one or two minutes will be enough to pre-heat.

Keep in mind that it is made of aluminum. Even when frying foods, usually a medium heat is far better than a high heat because the pan conducts heat so well. Frying food on high heat can make the pan so hot that it burns the food, which will then stick. In addition, always make sure to keep your cookware clean. Dried food will always cause more sticking, aside from sanitary issues. Keep your Calphalon cookware clean and in good shape, and it will serve you for years to come!

Make Money Solving Plumbing Problems

Owners or tenants pay you to solve plumbing problems in their apartments or homes. Since this is an emergency type service, you should be able to make money without much trouble. People seem to have leaking water, and/or stopped up drains quite often. With the right kind of knowledge, you can easily solve most of these problems. (This is article #4 in a series of emergency handyman services.)

Requirements

This business idea is best suited for people who are physically fit and enjoy working with their hands. You must be able to locate and remedy common plumbing problems. If needed, you can buy how-to manuals at most plumbing or building products stores.

You should own a pickup truck or van to haul equipment, materials, supplies, and trash. You need to own or purchase the equipment and protective gear required for this activity. You should set up a home office with the basic office equipment and supplies.

Getting customers

Use a simple classified advertisement in the local newspaper or on craigslist.org to get customers. Also, advertise in any property owner's newsletter.

Preliminary job activities

After arriving at the job site and greeting the customer, inspect the water leak or stopped up drain. Determine if you need to purchase any plumbing fixtures, drainpipe, or water pipe. You should already have a supply of assorted drain traps, gaskets, screws, and washers for minor repairs.

The customer may be in a hurry and want you to work on a holiday, weekend, or at night to get the plumbing problem fixed.

You can use standard job bid forms to estimate your labor and the costs of materials and supplies. This bid should include the fees for any extra services to be performed, such as hauling away any large amounts of trash. If the customer accepts your bid, you both can sign the bid form.

Turn off the main water supply valve. Also, shut off any electricity or combustible gas to an affected water appliance.

Main job activities

Following are typical plumbing problems you may encounter and the procedures to take care of them.

Clogged aerator or showerhead -- The aerator is a device on the end of a faucet spout that mixes air with water to produce a gentle stream of water. A showerhead often is adjustable to allow different streams of water, such as a fine spray or a concentrated spray. You can unscrew either device from its spout and open it up to remove all the clogging particles inside it. Then screw the device back onto its spout.

Defective hot water tank -- If the tank itself is leaking it will have to be replaced. Sometimes a heating element on an electrical hot water tank burns out. In this case, only the heating element has to be replaced. If the hot water tank has to be replaced then the defective tank will have to be hauled to a suitable dumpsite. In most cases, a defective hot water tank should be repaired or replaced only by a licensed plumber. (Note: Draining, refilling, or replacing a hot water tank is a very delicate operation. Be sure you are fully qualified before attempting these procedures.)

Frozen water pipe --If the frozen water pipe is ruptured, turn off the main water shutoff valve. Then you will have to cut out the portion of the pipe that is split or ruptured. Place a water pail under this gap. Next heat the pipe beginning where the pipe was cut off and going both ways toward the rest of the pipe. After thawing out the pipe, you will have to replace the missing portion of the pipe. Then open a faucet and turn on the main water shutoff valve to verify that the pipe has been thawed out.

If the frozen water pipe is not ruptured, do not turn off the main water shutoff valve. Begin heating the pipe starting from an open faucet and going toward the portion of the pipe that appears to be frozen. Usually this will be where the pipe is exposed to cold air.

You can use any of the following heat sources to thaw out the pipe:

* Electric heat tape
* Heat lamp
* High-power air dryer
* Small portable heater

Do not use an open flame to thaw out a frozen water pipe. This may cause a fire.

Leaking bathtub or shower -- Any leaks from the showerhead or tub spout should be obvious from visual inspection immediately after use. You may be able to fix the leak by putting Teflon tape on the threaded pipe that supports the showerhead or tub spout. If the showerhead or tub spout is rusted out, you will have to replace it.

If the shower drain, or the bottom drain in a bathtub, is leaking as seen from water stains underneath it, you probably need to install a new gasket or plumbing putty between the drain flange and the shower or tub floor. If the side drain (overflow drain) in a bathtub is leaking as seen from water stains underneath it, you probably need to install a new gasket between the outside wall of the tub and the flange of the overflow drain.

If the seams in the bathtub wall or shower enclosure have opened, you will have to reattach the wallboard and/or apply new caulking. Also, you may need to renew the caulking between the bottom of the shower or bathtub wall, and the top edge of the bathtub or shower drain pan.

Another possible source of leaks is water spraying through the gaps where a shower curtain fails to butt firmly against the wall on either side. You can use adhesive caulk to attach plastic triangles to the top edges of the bathtub to close these gaps.

Leaking drainpipe or trap -- The two main causes of leaks from a drainpipe are a rusted or damaged pipe, or a worn-out gasket.

If there is no gasket at the source of the leak, then the drainpipe itself is probably damaged. You will have to replace that piece of the drainpipe. This drainpipe is usually either white thin-wall plastic, chromed metal, ABS black plastic, or galvanized steel.

If the drainpipe goes under the floor, you may have to get access to the crawl space or basement to locate the source of the leak.

When replacing a portion of a drainpipe that goes inside a larger pipe, be sure to allow for the "hidden" portion of the replacement drainpipe. Where different kinds of drainpipe are connected together, you'll need a compression nut and a new gasket for the connection.

Leaking faucet -- A standard faucet (or hose cock) is used for either cold water or hot water. Thus, two faucets are needed to deliver the desired temperature of water to a sink, washbasin, showerhead, or tub spout. A hose cock is a shutoff valve that allows the female end of a garden hose to be attached to its spout. It is used as a water supply for a clothes washer or a lawn sprinkler, or as a drain for a hot water tank.

The standard faucet (or hose cock) has a rubber washer that bears against a valve seat, the source of water. The washer is held in place by a screw that goes into the stem (spindle) of the handle.

A single-handle faucet controls the water temperature by mixing hot and cold water together. Depending on the manufacturer, these faucets use different devices to mix and control the flow of water. This device could be a cartridge, ceramic disc, or rotary ball with two rubber seats and springs. If this device is leaking, you will have to replace it.

Leaking toilet --If the toilet is a single piece, the leak will be where the toilet sits on the floor. You will have to unfasten the toilet from the floor, replace the wax ring, and re-fasten the toilet to the floor.

If the toilet has a separate water tank, the leak may be where the bottom of the water tank attaches to the top of the toilet bowl. If so, you will have either to carefully tighten the screws or replace the gaskets.

Leaking water appliance -- a water appliance refers to a dishwasher or clothes washer. The two main sources of leaks in a dishwasher are the hot water supply line and the drain line. You have to remove the kick plate of the dishwasher to get access to the underside of the dishwasher. While the dishwasher is running, you can inspect these two lines to see where the leak originates. To fix the problem, you probably need to tighten or replace the connection between the dishwasher and the water or drain line.

There could also be a leak where the other end of the hot water supply line goes into its shut off valve. If so, you probably need to tighten the connection or replace the washer.

A clothes washer is connected to the hot water and cold water supply with a pair of short hoses. These hoses are similar to a garden hose, but are stronger. You may have to tighten the connection or replace the washer. If the drain line connection to the clothes washer is leaking, you should tighten it or replace the washer.

Stopped up drainpipe or trap -- If the trap is blocked, you can simply unscrew it and dump out the water and any blocking material. Once the trap is cleaned out, any further blockage would be in the drainpipe after the trap. Remove the trap again and use an auger to clean out the drainpipe.

Stopped up toilet -- If the toilet bowl is overflowing, the blockage is either in the internal trap in the toilet, or in the drainpipe going from the base of the toilet to the sewer line. In either case, you probably need to use an auger to clear out the obstruction.

Final job activities

Turn the main water supply valve back on and turn on any electricity or combustible gas that was previously shut off. Check for any leaks or drain blockages. Inspect the premises to verify you have finished all required tasks. Remove all your equipment and supplies.

Collect your agreed upon fee from the customer. Haul large amounts of trash away, if part of your agreed upon services. (Remove small amounts of trash as a courtesy to your customer. You can haul it to a dumpsite later.)

Final thoughts

This business idea lets you make money while providing a needed service. You can start out as a part-time venture. Then, if the demand is sufficient, you might want to make it into a full-time venture.

PMC Starter Kit

Developed in Japan in the 1990s, precious metal clay (PMC) is malleable and easy to use and is ideal for producing individual and intricate pieces. This versatile product opens up a wealth of possibilities in crafts and jewellery making. Made from a combination of organic binding and fine metal particles, PMC has similar properties to ceramic clay. However, once dried and fired in a kiln or by gas torch the clay becomes like metal in density. One of the most popular choices of PMC for jewellery makers in particular is silver clay, which is made up of 99.5% silver and provides a finer looking finish. This simple process has revolutionised jewellery and bead making, allowing both professional designers and those making creations as part of a hobby to create unique and stunning pieces.

Precious metal clay is simple to use and the popularity of this adaptable material continues to grow due to the ease of use, flexibility and variety it provides artists and jewellery makers alike. Like soft clay, this type of medium can be shaped and moulded by hand to create a great variety of shapes and sizes. The softness of the clay is also ideal for creating intricate designs with etching, stamps or transfer paper. Once dried out and heated in high temperature conditions the metal clay will shrink in size, making detail appear even finer and more complex. Following this metal clay can be polished to leave a stunning piece of design in a variety of finishes.

The popularity of this adaptable material continues to grow due to the ease of use, flexibility and variety it provides artists and jewellery makers. It is easy to get started n PMC as there is no requirement for expensive tools and equipment. PMC can be used by anyone, anywhere and offers an interesting and fun medium to experiment with.

Getting started

Before using PMC, otherwise know as art clay, a smooth clean surface is required as a work station. This can simply be laminated card, a plastic sheet or piece of Teflon. The advantage of working on Teflon is that the PMC can also be left to dry on this surface and is re-useable. Small clean paintbrushes are also useful tools for smoothing edges or covering cracks in the precious metal clay. Olive oil is an essential tool for keeping the clay moist and malleable to work with. However, too much oil can prevent the art clay from drying once the piece is complete.

To work on your metal clay a roller is needed. This could be a plastic rolling pin or anything similar, and is used to evenly roll out the clay before shaping and designing. If creating intricate matching designs working on graph paper can be useful to ensure all dimensions are the same. As you become more advanced and confident in using the clay, more techniques and tools can be introduced. Sandpaper is required for the dried clay, which needs to be smoothed before going into the kiln or being placed under a gas torch where it turns to metal and is harder to work with. The rest is down to personal preference depending on whether you would like to use moulds, cutters, stamps or embellishments. The possibilities are endless when using PMC.

The Truth About Bottled Spring Water vs Purified Water

Spring Water - The Truth

Spring water bottled water companies are very good about manipulating the image of their water and hiding the truth about purity.

Images about bubbling mountain springs, fresh water glacier run off, frothy fresh water streams and other scenes that imply purity are nothing more than hype and spin that would make even the most seasoned politician blush.

There is a wealth of information about spring water that the public should know:

· Spring waters fluctuate in quality because the aquifers from which they emanate are constantly in a state of change.

· Spring water companies rarely talk about "purity" rather they keep referring to "natural" inferring that "natural "means "healthy". Polluted rivers and streams are "natural" but clearly not healthy.

· If a spring water company does claim to be 100% pure, that statement is misleading. The fact is that the "100% pure" refers not to the absence of impurities in the water, but to the source of the water itself. That is, 100% of the water in the bottle came from an underground source (i.e. a spring), rather than from a surface water source.

· Spring water companies claim that their springs are "protected" but this tern needs further definition. The springs are not protected from contamination like acid rain, industrial pollution (TCE, Benzene, Perchlorinate, MTBE, Teflon PFOA, nitrates, fertilizers and a host of other pollutants.) The springs are only protected against unwanted visitors.

· If it is processed it is usually only filtered to remove large particles.

· Many springs produce water that contain so many impurities the water will not even meet municipal tap water standards.

· Most spring water bottlers avoid issuing bottled water analysis reports because of the significant contamination that these reports would show.

· Most companies do not bottle at the source instead trucking the water to market.

Purified Water-The Truth

Purified water is water that is processed usually by a steam distillation/oxygenation process that is regulated and tested by the Food and Drug Administration of the Federal Government. The standards are the toughest in the industry - in order to qualify as "purified water" the water must test 99.9% pure.

· Purified water represents the fastest growing segment of the bottled water industry mainly because it's purer than other types of waters. There is a definite health trend today toward healthy living and many health conscious consumers buy because they want something that's of a higher quality and purity than other options like tap water.

· To meet the legal definition of "purified water", water impurities must be removed to meet the U.S. Pharmacopeia definition (99.9% pure) adopted by the Food and Drug Administration.

· Purified water must be tested and the results made available to the public. Any reputable purified bottled water supplier will produce testing reports upon request.

· The most effective process for purification of water is a steam distillation/ozonation process that creates pure, good tasting water. It produces water that is 100% water and 0% everything else.

· Purified water suppliers have their water tested at regular intervals and the tests are available upon request. Unlike spring water companies, purified water companies are happy to share their test results.

When you compare purified water against spring water the truth is revealed: If you want water that contains contaminants, is based upon hype, word parsing and marketing exaggeration - then drink spring water. If you want to drink water that is 100% pure and provides a healthy lifestyle for you and your family - drink purified water.

Teflon Leader

"Our employees just do not get it. They do not take responsibility. They lack passion. They do not follow through..." (The list goes on.)

Not to be confused with the "Teflon Don" John Gotti, (although there are some parallels) the "Teflon Leader" makes mistakes because they are human, but they are allergic to blaming themselves for anything. For a time some of them can retain a leadership role without blame, but their lack of performance always catches up with them eventually.

Rather than serving their employees, clients and partners, the Teflon Leader is consciously or subconsciously driven to impress other people to earn their approval. The thought that something is wrong with them makes them uncomfortable. They instinctively react to situations by trying to focus on who made the mistake, except themselves.

Part of the learning process to become a great leader is to gain knowledge from your mistakes. Unfortunately the Teflon Leader misses these opportunities to develop competitively effective leadership skills because they do not accept responsibility for their errors.

Sometimes even without knowing it they become, as the movie character Dirty Harry concluded about the serial killer, "... a legend in their own mind." Unfortunately that is not reality.

This self-justification eliminates their ability to be a top Leader who can sustain growth and profits over time.

How about you? Are there times when you have missed opportunities to grow because of your unwillingness to accept responsibility for your share of a mistake?

MEETING IDEAS

Our discussion of a Teflon Leader is a challenge for you to consider whether you or a member of your management team is too effective at avoiding blame or taking responsibility for their mistakes.

Consider these questions to help your team to take responsibility for both their successes and mistakes in your workplace, starting with yourself:

1. During the last 24 hours have you failed to use a fully professional, positive tone of voice in a conversation with another person? How could you have communicated differently? Do you need to apologize? Should you work on pausing before responding in more conversations, and in particular with this individual?

2. Describe the last time someone suggested that you admit a mistake and you refused to take full responsibility. How can you replace that reaction with a more thought-out response in the future?

3. Before you conclude you need to confront someone else about their Teflon Leader tendencies, please do a thorough evaluation of your own actions and motivations; and then confirm your conclusions with people strong enough to hold you accountable.
