Toilets For Sale

Despite its importance in our day to day lives, we very often tend to over rule our toilets when it comes to making a lifestyle statement. Going to look for bathroom toilets for sale? Be prepared, there is more than a variety available in the market. Conventionally you have the option to choose from two piece seats which come with a cistern and seat fused together through ceramic. The other one would be the jazzy wall mounted seat which does not have a water cistern and uses water from direct supply.

When choosing your seat, be careful and sharp. In case your placement position is small, go for a round bowl, and in case you wish to try them for strength, then go for the elongated seats, for they have proven themselves for a better standing support. While the height may range from 11 inch to 15 inch, with the smaller size easy for use by kids, and 16 inch model with wheel chair user-friendliness. Next, go for the flushing idea as most of the toilets now days come with 7 liter cisterns. In case you favor a gravity fed system; they are available in all variants. There are other models with pressure assistance. These may be a tiny bit too expense, but their air pressure technique rocks in efficiency. If you are very particular about that kind of efficiency, then you might as well look for the system with in built pumping units which gush out the water through thick pressure valve.

While installing the toilet, take a measurement of the distance between the seat and the wall. Make sure you do this before the previous seat has been taken off its hinges and bolts. Compare both the seats and their length at the base. In case the bathroom is small, measure the distance from the side walls just as well to get a gauge on your wall to wall length. Remember, you always have the option to buy your toilet in pair or by unit. Single piece toilets however, have an advantage of cleanliness over other seats. Also, they eliminate the chance of seepage of water between the seat and the cistern. While, in the two piece pack, the cistern and the seat has to be bought individually. This option is easy for your pocket.

There are a lot many other random features which you will come across as you go searching toilets for sale. There are features such as a sanitary hold, which makes sure that water does not accumulate around the base of the toilet seat. This simple step can eliminate the chances of fungus and stains both adding life to your new bathroom. For physically challenged people there is the option for ease of access to seats which come with seat tops as varying as 17 to 19 inches and comply with all the guidelines of disability laws. Also, there is an option for you to buy a larger trap way for your seat. A trap way is the tube which connects your seat to the drainage. A Teflon trap way is less likely to develop congestion.

An Untold Story of The NASA Gemini 76 Mission

As with much of history, it's the untold stories that are interesting and provide additional insight into specific points in our past.

The Gemini program of NASA was the two man capsule follow-on to Project Mercury (which launched the first American into space).

There were many differences between Project Mercury and the Gemini Project, not the least of which was the propellants used for the on-board engines. The Mercury capsule propulsion system used hydrogen peroxide forced across a metal screen into the engines producing steam which steered the capsule. The Gemini capsule used nitrogen tetra oxide and hydrazine that were each forced into the engine chamber. These two chemicals automatically ignite upon contact (hypergolic) producing the force for the steering and reentry engines of the spacecraft.

These two chemicals were stored in Teflon bladders which when pressurized with helium "squirted" the respective chemical into the engine chambers. In the early 1960s a lot about Teflon, as with the two chemical propellants, which was unknown and there were trials and errors.

During the checkout of Gemini 6 it was discovered that the check valves (which were to keep the chemical vapors from migrating back into the common helium supply) were sticking open. No one knew why and it was of such a magnitude that the subsequent launch of Gemini 6 was, scrubbed moving Gemini 7 into the next launch slot.

I was working as a chemical specialist in the NASA Propulsion System Office at Cape Canaveral and felt that the sticking check valves were being caused by something having to do with the chemical propellants. I suggested that a series of tests be conducted to find out if this was in fact the reason and if it were, to find a solution to the problem.

I conducted a series of tests at an unused launch complex with the assistance of Joe Fitzsimmons (a NASA summer aide). Helium was blown over individual canisters of nitrogen tetra oxide and hydrazine and allowed to mix in a column outside the block house in case of an explosion.

Sure enough a yellowish substance deposited onto the inner surfaces of the column. We had found the source of what was causing the check valves to stick. Now the question was how to get rid of it.

We found the solution - blow across the yellowish substance with dry helium or nitrogen and the substance "melted" away. With this information, we were able to fix the sticking valves of Gemini 6 allowing the subsequent launch of Gemini 6 and the "face-to-face" meeting of Gemini capsule 7 and 6.

For this work, Joe and I were presented with large pictures (framed with no glass) of a Gemini capsule on a Titan Launch vehicle at liftoff. I still have that picture today.

FEP Non Stick Coating - Again, There's More Than Just PTFE

FEP non stick coating resins (fluorinated ethylene propylene), such as Dupont FEP, are produced by co-polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene.

With a crystalline melting point of 554 degrees Fahrenheit, this has mechanical properties suitable from cryogenic to about 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Compared with other fluoropolymers and engineering plastics, it is softer, with lower tensile strength, wear or creep resistance.

FEP non stick coating differs from other Dupont Teflon or PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) resins in that it is melt-processable. Much like PFA, though with lower heat stability, the FEP has the capability of forming continuous, monolithic films. This is especially important in applications requiring permeation strength, minimal micro porosity, or improved base metal isolation. It is highly resistant to oxidation and action of chemicals including strong acids, alkali, oxidizing agents, nuclear radiation, UV rays, and ozone.

Absorption rates are comparatively lower with this than almost all others. It absorbs practically no common acids or bases at temperatures as high as 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Weight increases are generally less than 1% when exposed at elevated temperatures for long periods. Aqueous solutions are absorbed little. Moisture absorption is typically less than 0.01% at ambient temperature and pressure.

Gases and vapors, too, show low permeation rates with it than for other fluoroplastics. In general, permeation increases with temperature, pressure, and surface area contact, but decreases with increased thickness.

Mechanical properties include, but are not limited to, flexibility at low temperatures, stability at high temperatures, low coefficient of friction, dielectric strength, corrosion resistance, and non stick (release). The FEP non stick coating comes from relatively newer fluorocarbon resin products. It is especially important for designers and end-users requiring higher rates of release (non stick) performance or chemical stability.

Today, it exists in a number of arrays, for increased toughness or abrasion resistance, making it another viable choice in non stick coating technology.

Tonneau Cover Maintenance and Cleaning Guides

Tonneau covers (like GM Tonneau Cover) are made of leather, vinyl or other soft flexible materials used for protecting the interior of a convertible when the soft top is down. Tonneau covers are also used in pickup trucks to protect the luggage or other stuff placed at the truck's bed from dirt particles and other foreign objects.

To prolong the usage and function of tonneau covers, you should check it regularly for wear outs, looseness, and other debris caught on the cover. Check mounting hardware regularly to insure that all bolts or clamps are tight. Lit is also recommended that you lubricate the locks regularly with a quality Teflon or silicone spray by using a can with an insertable plastic tube. Best of all, check the manufacturer of the tonneau cover for specific maintenance and cleaning guides since there are several tonneau cover designs and types.

When cleaning your tonneau cover, make sure to clean your vehicle and cover in shaded place like under a tree or in an open garage. Start by washing your lid with cool, clean water and a mild soap. Make sure to first flood the lid with water to remove surface grit that will scratch the finish when wiped. Next, using a hose, rinse the cover well making sure to remove all traces of soap and wipe off excess water using a sponge. Be careful to hose down the entire car to prevent soap from streaking your car's paint finish. Do not use chemicals like detergents, dish washing liquids, bleaches, harsh cleansers, strong cleaners, dry-cleaning solvents, or any other strong chemicals as a cleanser. These chemicals can have harmful substances on its mixture that could damage your tonneau covers. Moreover, avoid using hot water when cleaning the cover.

If you have a vinyl tonneau cover, apply some quality vinyl cleaner that you can find in the nearest auto shop. Using a white all-cotton towel, wash the entire tonneau cover with the cleaner. Make sure to follow the instructions found on your chosen cleaner to help you out in your work and to avoid damaging your tonneau covers. Wash the entire tonneau cover and never spot clean to avoid rings or bright spots on your tonneau covers. Make sure that you will only use soft cotton cloth or sponge as a cleaning tool. Do not use rough abrasive cleaning pads because it can scratch the vinyl creating pores that allows dirt and other unwanted particles to stick.

Repeat the cleaning process if you feel that you haven't done enough and the tonneau cover is still dirty.

Tips for Selecting Promotional Umbrellas

Many businesses, organizations and benefits are constantly looking for good giveaway items to say thank you to customers or benefactors. Promotional umbrellas are always a popular item for these kinds of moments but selecting the right promotional umbrella is often not as easy as you might think.

Here are some things to think about while you are browsing catalogues or doing online research.

1. How heavy do you want them to be? Promotional umbrellas come in a variety of weights so knowing the weight range you are interested in is helpful. You might want to consider lighter promotional umbrellas as they will be easier to transport and carry.

2. How easily do you want them to open and do you want the umbrella to open automatically? Again, this is a matter of knowing your customer and donor base. Automatic opening promotional umbrellas may cost a bit more but if the recipients of your promotional umbrellas are senior citizens the additional ease of opening may be a real value added feature.

3. How big do you want them to be? You will have a fairly wide range of sizes to choose from so, knowing whether you want to buy umbrellas that are small and storable under a car seat or can fit into a briefcase, purse or backpack is an important decision.

4. Decide if you want to select ones that are weatherproof and windproof. Both of these features seem reasonable as they mean the umbrella won't rust and is less likely to turn inside out in a mild wind.

5. Are you interested in buying Teflon treated hoods? The Teflon repels water which helps the hood to dry faster.

6. What color(s) and design are you looking for? If you select more neutral colors and smaller size, the promotional umbrella will be more versatile and fit with more people's style

7. What are you going to have printed on the promotional umbrellas? Umbrellas with a name and logo on them are a good way to market products and services as very time someone pops open the hood they are marketing you.

8. Is a storage pouch a must? Sometimes a case to store a promotional umbrella is a nice feature, but there are many people who do not use them even though they come with the product.

The History of Hip-Hop Rap Artist Rick Ross From Independent to on a Major Record Label

Miami / Carol City rap artist Rick Ross, born William Leonard Roberts II on January 28th, 1976 took on his name from the "Freeway" Ricky Ross who was a drug trafficker on the other side of the country. Ross started in the music industry as a ghost-writer for many famous Hip-Hop artist. For 12 years under Ted Lucas of Slip-n-Slide Records, Ross received little if any spotlight. Ross dropped several independently produced mixtapes, but it wasn't until he dropped the major hit record "Hustlin" produced by J.R. Rotem that got him the recognition he so desperately deserved. E-Class of Poe Boy records got DJ Khaled of WEDR 99 Jamz to play the "Hustlin" record on the radio and soon everyone outside Miami took notice of what the local people into the music scene already knew. Rick Ross was caught in a bidding war between the music industry's major record labels, but ultimately signed with Jay-Z and Def Jam Records.

Since then Ross has released the studio albums "Port of Miami", "Trilla", "Deeper Than Rap", and "Teflon Don". He also released a collaboration album "Custom Cars & Cycles" with Triple C (Torch, Gunplay, and Young Breed) who are signed to Ross' label Maybach Music Group. Ross has extended his reach and developed Maybach Music Latino that features Latin rap artist BaRock (U.B.) Urbano, Destinee the Boss Lady, and Uncle Sam's Favorite Nephew Da Whammer.

In early 2009 Rick Ross sparked a feud with 50 Cent that turned into one of Hip-Hop's biggest and most personal Rap Beefs ever. Supposedly, 50 Cent had given Ross a weird look at a Hip-Hop award show. Quickly, Ross leaked the song "Mafia Music" mentioning the mother of 50 Cent's child and how child-support wasn't being paid. The remarks weren't taken lightly by 50 Cent and he replied with his own record "Officer Ricky". Ross arrogantly told 50 Cent he had 72 hours to come back with a better record. This infuriated 50 Cent and it escalated to what has never been seen in a Rap Battle. 50 Cent did his hysterical shenanigans on wax, but he also made animated cartoons drawn of Rick Ross. Where he takes it too far is when he pulled court documents, placed pictures of Ross' mother on the Internet, took trips to outside Ross' home, took Rick Ross' baby mother on shopping trips and even placed her in a pornographic film. All this was in attempt to destroy Ross' career and life. Fortunately for Rick Ross, none of this mattered to the music lovers that supported good music.

In 2008, Ross was ranked the fourth spot of "Hottest MCs in The Game" list by MTV. Rick Ross continues to make great music and his latest song "B.M.F. (Blowin' Money Fast)" featuring Styles P of the LOX is as big as his first hit record, proving that after five years Ross still knows how to please the contemporary Rap music listener.

PFA Non Stick Coating? Yes, There's More To Life Than Just PTFE

PFA is a non stick coating too, you ask? Yes, there are choices beyond PTFE. And while these resin systems (offered by DuPont and others) are comparatively newer products, they should be regarded equally important for product designers and equipment manufacturers considering Teflon.

Tensile strength, stiffness, and flexural modulus are outstanding. Both at cryogenic and higher continuous temperatures (500 F). PFA has a lower molecular weight than PTFE, which makes it non-suitable for applications involving low friction.

PFA is defined as a 'perfluorocarbon' compound. This is a type of fluoropolymer in which the hydrogen directly attached to the carbon atoms is replaced by fluorine. The result is protection from chemical corrosion not unlike fully fluorinated polymers. Chemical resistance is outstanding.

For example, PFA plastic is chemically inert to strong mineral acids, inorganic bases, inorganic oxidizers, or salt solutions. Its resistance to organic compounds includes acids, anhydrides, aromatics, aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, ethers, esters, chlorocarbons, fluorocarbons, and mixtures of these compounds. Though halogen products containing fluorine, for example, will attack.

So, why the advantage in PFA coating corrosion protection? Besides high permeation strength, thickness is key. With the ability to reach 0.010 inch or more, chemical penetration can be significantly retarded, thus reducing the likelihood of reaching the corrosion vulnerable substrate

What about non-stick performance? Besides low surface energy (non wetting) look again to permeation strength. This becomes more evident in sticky applications involving compounds with sublimation byproducts (solids converted to vapors).

Keep in mind higher temperatures increased rates of permeability. It's the fall in specific gravity, the result of more spacing between molecules and more molecular activity, that causes the easier pathway for diffusion.

PFA resins are in a class known as melt-processable fluoroplastics. PFA is similar to PTFE and FEP, although it has somewhat better mechanical properties than FEP at temperatures above 302 degrees Fahrenheit, and can be used to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. It is about equal to PTFE in chemical resistance.

So, the next time you're looking for high release performance, consider PFA non stick coatings.

Stainless Steel Cookware - Professional Chef Magazines

A set of stainless steel pots and pans will provide several pans of various sizes which will give you just what you need for any purpose or occasion. If you are struggling with unsightly, mismatched cookware, and having trouble finding a size that is appropriate for what you are trying to do, you might want to consider replacing them with a new set of cookware that will give you just what you need any time you need it.

A great selection for cookware is stainless steel. Other cookware materials such as copper or aluminum simply do not have the special properties that it does. It will not be damaged by foods, no matter what the ph balance is. It resists corrosion, scratches, and other damages. Properly cared for stainless steel is shiny and beautiful, adding a gourmet look to your kitchen.

Stainless steel cookware's quality can largely be determined by its ability to provide an excellent cooking experience. In order to achieve this, when selecting any stainless steel cookware, be sure to look for a disk of material which is heat-conducive, and is located on the bottom of the cookware. While stainless is an excellent choice for cookware; it needs to be combined with aluminium or copper. Of these choices, copper is a better conductor of heat.

Second, make sure to choose the right non-stick coating. A high quality non-stick coating produces eye-pleasing browned crusts on foods that easily release from the pan. A high quality non-stick coating will last a long time and be resistant to scratching and other damage if properly cared for.

Teflon can be a good choice for a non-stick coating since it is durable, inexpensive and easy to find. Used and maintained properly, Teflon is safe and will ensure that your foods can obtain flavorful browning without sticking. Another option for the best non-stick cookware is a coating called Silverstone. Silverstone is more durable than Teflon and can withstand more scratching with sharp implements, but it is pricier and harder to find.

A final tip when shopping for stainless steel cookware is to look not only at prices but also brands and reviews. Cooking and professional chef magazines have plenty of information about the various brands of stainless steel cookware.

Why Cook With Cast Iron Cookware?

I'm a recent fan of cooking with cast iron cookware. My interest started with my frustration with Teflon coated pans and their tendency to lose their nonstick coating over time. I really dislike replacing my pans. And of course some people express concerns about the safety of ingesting tiny particles of Teflon, although there's so far no definite evidence of health hazards.

While talking with my mother I learned that she was looking at cast iron cookware as an alternative. When properly seasoned it is fairly nonstick, and it can last for generations.

I guess my husband paid attention to my complaints about my nonstick pans. He got me a cast iron pan the following Christmas. I was and still am delighted. I now also have my grandmother's old cast iron pan. It's a true delight.

Cast iron cookware can actually make your cooking a bit healthier. It adds a bit of iron to your food. How much depends on the age of the pan and what you're cooking, but the tests have been done, and they are quite clear. It's really nice knowing that something good for you is being added just through your choice of pan.

Cast iron heats very evenly. It may take a touch longer, but it's really not that much of a wait for it to heat up. You can even use it in the oven, which most other pans are not supposed to do.

It's very affordable. When I price cast iron in comparison to stainless steel pans, the iron ones often come out cheaper.

It's more nonstick than stainless steel or aluminum pans. Food can still stick, but in my experience it really doesn't do so all that badly. And if you want a quick way to remove it, I've read that filling the pan with water and then heating it to boiling makes it easier to get the food off.

One thing you will always have to do with cast iron is make sure that you dry it completely, or you do risk it rusting. The easiest way to do this is to place it on the stove and turn on the burner until the pan is completely dry. Give it a light coating of vegetable oil, and you're in good shape.

This bit of extra care is very much so worth it to me. I have pans that I will probably never need to replace, and can be handed down after I am gone. No health worries due to what the pan is made of. All in all I find it to be a very good deal.

High End Speaker Cables Without the High End Prices

If you have just started to become interested in state of the art audio equipment then no doubt you were shocked the first time you walked into a high end audio store and saw a five-figure price tag attached to what is essentially just a length of wire. Even the seemingly simplest components such as connectors can cost anywhere up to a few hundred dollars each! So if you just cannot justify spending that kind of cash, but still want to be able to enjoy similar levels of sound quality what can you do?

Thankfully, it is actually possible to achieve high end audio performance without having to pay high end prices!

As with most things in life it is possible to reach a point where the increase in cost of an item is not in proportion to the improvement in performance - in other words you end up paying super inflated prices but don't actually end up gaining much of an improvement for your money. What many consumers out there don't realize is that it is pretty easy to reach these higher levels of performance simply by making smart purchases.

Let's get something clear right away: a speaker cable is a speaker cable. There haven't really been any major advancements in the technology since the very first cables were produced. Of course, you will find some cables that are better than others but this is because the majority of manufactures out there have become so tied up in creating slick advertising campaigns and marketing meaningless buzzwords that they have forgotten that the most important thing in making a speaker cable that performs to a high level is to use the best possible materials during the manufacturing process.

The twisted pair design is great at cancelling out electromagnetic interference and RF noise. It's a technique that has been around since the late 1800s and it has remained in use because it is cheap to implement and is highly effective. So the basic technology used to produce speaker cables is exactly the same for the most basic cables and the cables that have five-figure price tags alike. The only factor that differentiates the performance of these cables is the quality of the materials used. For instance, a cable that is made using the best quality materials will perform to a much higher standard than a cable produced using the same techniques but making use of the cheapest, lowest quality materials.

The most effective materials to use in a speaker cable are pure silver insulated with Teflon; however this can lead to a cable that is very expensive. For those with tighter budget, silver plated copper insulated with polyethylene still provides high quality output for a much lower price.

Many people believe that copper is the best electrical conductor, but this is not the case. Silver is actually a much better conductor, which means that it delivers lower resistance and an increased frequency response. However, pure silver is a much more expensive material compared to copper, which is why many audio manufacturers, worried that switching to silver would have a massive impact on their profit levels, have encouraged rumours about silver sounding bright. A good alternative to using pure silver is to use silver plated copper - this is much more economical, yet delivers performance that is almost identical to its pure silver counterparts.

The insulation used in the speaker cable can also have an affect on performance. Teflon is considered to be the best insulator, however as with pure silver, Teflon is an expensive material. A good compromise is to use polyethylene, which again almost matches the performance of Teflon, but has a much more wallet friendly price tag.

By shopping around and carefully examining the specification of the speaker cable before making your purchase you can ensure that you get the very most for your money, regardless of your budget

Diecast Helicopter Model - Black Shark Ka-50 Combat Helicopter

About Ka-50 combat helicopter:

In developing the advanced Ka-50 combat helicopter in 1977 at the time the fleet of the Soviet Army's combat helicopters was made up of Mi- 24s. In terms of performance they could not challenge the new American AH- 64 "Apache" fire support helicopter, which was at that time being developed. Several helicopter configurations and were studied, as "Kamov" designers tried to create a new superior combat machine. The experience in Vietnam and in Afghanistan had disclosed the low survivability of the classic single-rotor helicopter due to its vulnerable tail rotor and extended rotor drive.

The advantages of an aerodynamically symmetrical coaxial main rotor came to the fore. Such a rotor assures easier helicopter control both in the manual and, more importantly, automatic mode, excellent manoeuvrability, take-off and landing in windy weather. Furthermore, the coaxial rotor considerably improves helicopter survivability, makes the rotor drive more compact and substantially reduces engine power losses. Today, Ka-50 is the world's best helicopter in terms of efficient use of engine power.

Many of us with no doubt can recall one of Russia's MiG-29 and its world famous stunt aerobatics nicknamed "the bell", or Su-27's "Pugachov cobra", which shock both experts and spectators. Ka- 50 also has its own aerobatic our de force: no other machine can execute the so-called "funnel" as perfectly as Ka-50. In actual fact, the "funnel" is an element of aerobatics, ensuring concentration of helicopter fire on pinpoint targets. Moreover, continuous displacement of the helicopter in the "funnel" in azimuth and elevation makes enemy timing extremely difficult. The Ka-50 can sideslip at 80 km/h or move backwards at 90 km/h. It only takes a few seconds to reverse flight direction. Ka-50 is the only craft in the world which can hover motionlessly for twelve hours in succession! The priorities of the "Kamov" company extend far beyond its unsurpassed experience in the theory and practice of building coaxial rotor helicopters. In 1965, the company started issuing fibre glass rotor blades in their helicopters ten years before the rest of the world. Similar fourth- generation blades are now being installed in Ka-50. One of the Ka- 50's rotor blades sustained 30 holes caused by automatic gunfire to test the helicopter's survivability. The craft continued flying for 80 accident- free hours.

The Ka-50's combat power is based essentially on anti-tank guided missiles and cannon fire. Frequently, then a helicopter attacks tanks, it becomes a good enemy target. Ka- 50 is able to counter this menace with its "Vikhr" supersonic anti-tank missiles, with a maximum range of 10 km. This weapon helps reduce the time spent by the helicopter in the firing zone, exceeding at the same time the effective range of enemy anti-aircraft missiles. The combination warhead of the supersonic missile includes several different fuses. All these factors, combined with a high-accuracy jam-proof guidance system, ensures effective engagement of different targets, including armoured targets (with dynamically protected armour up to 900 mm thick) as well as airborne targets flying at a speed of up to 800 km/h, using the same type of ammunition. The missile is renowned for its stealth: the enemy only detects the attack when hit. This weapon is characterized by lower reserves, which may well be used to enhance its combat capabilities. Extensive firing tests have proved the excellent qualities of the automatic guidance system: small-size targets are defeated at maximum ranges far more effectively.

The powerful 30 mm gun was borrowed from the Army and in terms of ammunition fully standardized with the one used in the BMP-2 mechanized infantry vehicle. The 2A42 gun has a selectable rate of fire and permits selective ammunition supply from two boxes loaded with armour-piercing and high-explosive sounds. Such design increases gun efficiency by more than 30 per cent in fire against light armour or airborne targets. The barrel life permits one to fire the complete 500-round load uninterruptedly without intermediate cooling. The BMP-2's and the Army combat helicopter's gun mount has proved reliable in conditions of extreme dust. The gun arrangement in Ka-50 is quite unusual. To preserve high accuracy of fire along with other remarkable properties, the gun is installed in the helicopter's centre of gravity.

This ensures strength requirements and eliminates any need for additional reinforcement of the structure. In addition, this factor helps reduce the recoil effect, helicopter weight and retain the center of gravity, as the rounds are expended. The electro hydraulic servo drive provides for the vertical and horizontal movements of the barrel to maintain the line of fire. The 2A42 guns mount "Kamov" experts in the development and operation of avionics. The contract for an integrated electronic weapons control and avionics system was awarded to a specialized company, which developed similar systems for MiG and Su single-seat fighters. The Ka-50's crew was thereby and the "Vikhr" missiles are designed by a team of weapon designers headed by A.G. Shipunov, corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Various Ka-50 armament versions have been proposed to better adapt the craft to the existing fleet of army combat helicopters and enable firing against different targets. Ordnance items are attached to four suspension fittings, which can receive virtually any airborne weapon: pylon locks' load-carrying capacity constitutes the only limitation. To use the whole ordnance range, no changes in the design or algorithm of the weapons control system are required.

The weapon pylons can be tilted. Owing to a 10-degree downward deflection, the pylons can impart, to a certain extent, new properties to the conventional weapons suspended on them. Fuel tanks may be counted on all suspension fittings, whenever necessary.

For combat helicopter group operations, Ka-50 has the requisite equipment and receives reconnaissance data from various guidance systems. The received data are also displayed on the windshield indicator.

To ensure high accuracy in the operation of airborne weapons, the human operator was replaced by an automatic guidance system. The human factor, liable to emotions and stresses, was eliminated from the most critical element of the system thanks to the high standard of the national defence industry and the long-term experience gained by "Kamov" experts in the development and operation of avionics. The contract for an integrated electronic weapons control and avionics system was awarded to a specialized company, which developed similar systems for MiG and Su single-seat fighters. The Ka-50's crew was hereby reduced to the minimum: it consists of a single pilot.

From the very start the helicopter featured enhanced survivability. On the one hand, a compact single- pilot raft was easier to protect, while at the same time the protection should be reliable enough to safeguard the single crewman. Unlike its counterpart "Apache", the Ka-50's essential units are considerably smaller in size. Complete elimination of the tail rotor, together with its controls and gear box, means that tail boom damage can be sustained without serious implications. Measures taken to improve both the craft's and rew's survivability ensured the successful solution of at least twenty-six problems. They include continuous operation of the rotor drive despite a damaged oil system, assisted emergency escape, an extensive fire extinguishing system and many others.

Composite materials constitute thirty-five per cent of the helicopter's load-carrying structure. They do not simply reduce the craft's weight. When hit by bullets or shells, the composites do not produce secondary effects (splinters, splashes) characteristic of a metal surface.

Particular care has been taken to protect the flight compartment and fuel system. The Ka-50's pilot is seated in a completely armoured and screened cockpit weighing a little over 300 kg. Multiple tests of various protection materials proved the high operational and combat properties of the combination steel armour. The matter is part of the fuselage's basic structure, providing it with additional strength. Due to improved counter shell resistance of such armour the pilot is protected from direct hits of several 20 mm shells. The cockpit design and layout restrict changes to 10-15% of the flight compartment's internal volume upon impact with the ground. No helicopter components can penetrate into the cockpit, when their attachment Parts are destroyed.

The new helicopter's landing gear and fuselage are designed to absorb ground impact overloads. The fuel system arrangement prevents any possibility of fire after any rough landing of the craft. If one of the two engines is damaged, the Ka-50 can continue the flight on one operating engine. The rotor swash plate control rods will remain operational, even if one has sustained two large-calibre machine gun shot holes.

The assisted emergency escape system deserves special attention. It is the world's first usable helicopter pilot rescue ejection system. The system operates reliably in any critical situation. The single-seat helicopter concept ensures maximum pilot survivability. The K-37 seat designed at the firm "Zvezda" by the team headed by G.I. Severin, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, allows pilot ejection at all altitudes and velocities, including zero. The pilot can also bail out without ejection. A number of consecutive operations are performed on board the craft as the system is actuated. They include jettisoning the main rotor blade followed by the opening of the cockpit panel and actuation of the ejection pocket motor. The aforementioned system is most convenient for a single-seat helicopter, owing to the lack of time available during the escape at minimum altitudes.

The problem of time and effort needed by the ground personnel to prepare the craft for combat was also solved successfully for the Ka-50. As the helicopter is armed on the ground, electric hoists built, to ensure easy suspension of weapons weighing up to 500 kg. The supersonic missiles are loaded as an integral block; the stowage process of the belted ammunition in the boxes is simplified and mechanized. Arrangement of the equipment in the helicopter ensures the operation of several specialists at a time. The equipment is easily accessible, owing to the large cowl openings. The Ka-50's peculiar features include grease free Teflon hinges used in all bearings of the mechanical system.

They enjoy a service life at least ten times as long as regular bearings. The Army's Ka-50 is designed for prolonged service from unprepared landing grounds located far from the main bases.

According to Air Force specialists and foreign experts, Ka-50 is not merely another good combat craft: it constitutes a new trend in helicopter construction and Army Aviation tactics. Designed initially to "neutralize" the US AH-64A "Apache" attack helicopter, Ka-50 has outperformed its rival in every respect. Now foreign companies, which received orders for Army combat helicopters must meet customer requirements to provide a machine at least as good as Kamov-50.

One of the producers of Black Shark Ka-50 combat helicopter Diecast Model is "Revell".

My Review Of The Cold Steel Recon-1 Folding Knife

Slick is the first word that comes to mind when I see Cold Steel's Recon-1 series folding knives.

The Recon-1 is available in these styles:

1. Clip Point (Plain or half serrated)

2. Tanto Point (Plain or half serrated)

3. Spear Point (Half serrated)

After hearing a lot of recent hype about the Recon-1 folding knives, I decided to get one of my own (Spear Point, half serrated).

What I like about the knife :

1. The Recon-1 has a handle made from G-10 which feels almost like sandpaper in your hand. I like this feature because it gives your hands good protection from slipping unto the blade.

2. The pocket clip is ambidextrous. You can use a T-6 torque wrench to switch the pocket clip from side to side. With the same wrench you can remove every other screw except for the pivot pin.

You can remove the larger screw (pivot pin) with a T-10 torque wrench.

3. The blades are crafted with Japanese AUS 8A stainless steel. This steel holds a good edge and is very easy to sharpen.

Every Recon-1 blade is hollow ground. This means that the blade tapers down to a RAZOR sharp edge.

4. Cold Steel's Ultra Lock mechanism has been tested to hold over 200 pounds. This gives you added peace of mind.

5. Recon-1 blades have a black Teflon finish. This helps to prevent rust and reflections.

What I didn't like about the Recon-1:

I like just about everything about the Cold Steel Recon-1 folding knife. The only blade size available is 4 inches. I hope that they come out with a 3.5 or 5 inch model.

Overall :

With a suggested retail value of $119.99, Cold Steel's Recon-1 series is well worth every penny.

These knives are made to handle some punishment.

Starting a Hair Salon - What Good Hair Suppliers Can Do For You

A hair salon is one business that is pretty much recession proof why is this so? No matter how bad things get, people will still be seeking out that last penny to get their hair done. However, in tight economic times people may become more selective when it comes to where they get their hair done. If your salon is top of the line, then folks will most certainly choose you over the person down the street. This is where a good hair supplier comes in. A good hair supplier will help you get the things that you need for your salon which will, in turn, help you bring in new customers and help keep your existing ones.

The Basics

You need good hair dressing equipment to get you started. There's no sense in even opening your doors if you don't have the basic hairdressing equipment you need to do the job. The very basic equipment includes: a chair or chairs, mirror, shampoo bowl, towels and capes. Before you snip the first lock of hair, you need to have these things in place.

Hair

If you are going to be cutting and styling hair, you will need the tools necessary to do that. Hair suppliers can offer scissors, blow dryers, combs, brushes, flat irons and other hair dressing equipment. You want your salon to have to look of a professional salon, not some fly by night gig.

Skin

Salons that give facials, do waxing and apply makeup, require other types of equipment. Mirrors, magnifying mirrors, tweezers, waxing stations and other equipment dealing with this line of salon work can be managed by a good hair supplier.

Nails

Tables, lamps, fans, nail dryers and so many other things go into the mani/pedi portion of a salon. If you include pedicures, there are also foot soaking devices and platforms to make it easier on the person giving the pedicure. Artificial nails introduce another area of beauty salon equipment as well. Hair suppliers can help you keep up with what is new and what will help your employees best do their jobs.

Spa

Incorporating a spa into your hair salon will certainly help bring in the money. It will also mean more equipment. There are so many ways you can go with a spa section to your salon. One of the most popular spa inclusions is massage therapy. The equipment needed for that may be pricy, but worth it. You would need to get a massage chair or massage bed and, depending on the types of massage offered, you may need the rocks and a rock warmer.

Hair suppliers can manage the equipment of your salon by ensuring that you have everything that you need to keep your hair salon profitable and efficient. They will introduce the newest and most efficient hair dressing equipment to you and show you the latest technological advances in the beauty industry. They will build a relationship with you and together you will ensure the success of your hair salon.

Does Your Dog Leak Urine?

Urinary incontinence is a common disorder of older female dogs, as many as 20% of neutered bitches develop it at some point in their lives. The reason is usually urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI). It can happen to any breed, though Boxers, Dobermanns and Collie breeds are particularly susceptible. In this article we review the current state of knowledge on this condition, focusing on the management and treatment options.

What is Urethral Sphincter Mechanism Incompetence (USMI)?

Affected bitches that are affected by this have poor tone to the smooth muscle surrounding their urethra (the tube that connects the bladder with the vagina), and often a shorter urethra than normal, and a bladder neck that is positioned too far back in the abdomen.

There are a number of contributing factors to this condition developing, but the main ones are breed susceptibility, obesity, body size, bladder position and spaying (neutering). Spaying is thought to have an effect by decreasing the estrogen levels, which affects the local muscle tone. However, most spayed bitches do not develop the condition and it should certainly not be used as an excuse not to neuter, as the increased likelihood of cancer in non neutered bitches is far more worrying.

What are the clinical signs?

The disorder is characterized by the passive leakage of urine without the dog noticing, often during sleep or rest while the dog is lying down. The owner usually remarks how there is always a stench of urine coming from the dogs bedding, and how the dog seems permanently wet and smelly around the back end. Continual leakage can also cause scalding of the skin around the vulva and groin.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis is usually made based on the history. The pattern of urination is important to rule out other causes of incontinence. Urinalysis, radiography and ultrasonography can be performed for confirmation if necessary (e.g. to assess the location of the bladder neck within the abdomen).

Treatment

The goal of treatment is to increase the tone of the urethral smooth muscle. This can be done medically, surgically or by both. Medical treatment is either by giving estrogens or adrenergic drugs.

Estrogens

Estrogens have been used for a long time as HRT in post menopausal women. Estriol, a naturally occurring estrogen, is available as a licensed veterinary product and works by restoring the normal function of the urethral sphincter muscle, and increasing the sensitivity of the urogenital tract to adrenergic stimulation. Side effects traditionally associated with long term estrogen use include bone marrow depletion, but this has not been observed with Incurin, the licensed veterinary drug.

Adrenergic drugs

Adrenergic drugs stimulate relaxation of the bladder wall and contraction of the urethral sphincter simultaneously. Both of these actions facilitate urine storage. Phenylpropanolamine (Propalin, Vetoquinol) is the most frequently used drug for this, and is extremely effective in the majority of cases.

Surgery

Surgery is usually only appropriate if medical treatment has failed to control the incontinence. The procedure most often used performed is colposuspension, which involves pulling the bladder neck and vagina forwards from within the pelvis to an abdominal position. This has a cure rate of about 50%.

Another technique is the transpelvic sling, where a ribbon is passed through the obturator foramen in the pelvis and between the urethra and vagina. The ribbon is pulled tight and fixed to itself. This may be performed in addition to colposuspension.

A less invasive technique is endoscopic injection of Teflon or collagen into the urethra about 1.5cm away from the bladder neck, artificially increasing the tone of the smooth muscle there. This has a reported success rate of just over 50%, and is sometimes done alongside adrenergic medication.

Are Your Aluminum Pots and Pans Dangerous?

There has been a lot of press about what kinds of pots and pans are safe. With the news that Teflon can flake into your food, some people are looking for alternatives to nonstick. Aluminum pots and pans are usually inexpensive and many people use them because they fit in their budget. They are lightweight and heat quickly and evenly during cooking.

Aluminum's primary problem is its reactivity. Foods prepared in aluminum can chemically react with the metal and form aluminum salts in your food. Excessive amounts built up over time can cause impaired vision and motor coordination as well as Alzheimer's disease. When you think that more than half of all the cookware sold today is made of aluminum, you have to wonder if this is a growing problem.

No definitive link has been proven between using aluminum cookware and deteriorating health. However, why take the chance? Here are some strategies you can use to keep your aluminum risks to a minimum.

Safety Precautions

Keep your aluminum cookware in good condition. If you see pits in the bottom or it seems worn, your food will absorb more aluminum. Replace it. Don't store food in aluminum. The longer you store or cook food in aluminum, the more aluminum your food absorbs. In other words, use a stainless steel kettle when you're cooking spaghetti sauce or homemade soup.

Don't cook acidic foods in aluminum. Foods with a high acid level or a large amount of salt may cause more aluminum to get in your food. Acidic foods include tomatoes, rhubarb and sauerkraut.

Alternatives

Anodized aluminum goes through a process that coats the surface of the cookware. This coating helps prevent aluminum from being absorbed by the food. Anodized aluminum doesn't react to acidic foods like aluminum so you can use it without worrying about topping your pasta with aluminum sauce. Anodized aluminum cookware is usually more expensive than plain aluminum.

Stainless steel is a combination of chromium and nickel. It lasts a long time and easy to clean. It is the choice of professional chefs the world over. Stainless steel can also be expensive and heavy. It does not react with foods, but may require special cleaning. If you have nickel allergies, you may want to avoid stainless steel cookware.

Copper pans are usually coated with stainless steel to make them easier to care for. Copper is a great conductor of heat and cooks food well, but it may react with food. They are very expensive and require a lot of care to remain looking their best.

Nonstick

Nonstick cookware is coated with Teflon or Silverstone. Both of these coatings may scratch easily if you use metal or wooden utensils. If overheated, the coatings may release toxic fumes that may also be carcinogenic. If you keep pet birds, keep them far away from the kitchen as the fumes are hazardous for them. Many people like the convenience of nonstick despite these problems.

Cast iron holds heat evenly and for long periods of time. They require a little extra care because they must be seasoned to keep food from sticking, and they are very heavy for some people. They can be used in the oven as well as on the stove. Keep them oiled between uses to prevent rust.

The Top Three Healthy Non Toxic Cookware Sets

With all of the bad publicity that Teflon and aluminum cookware has received, many of us are searching for healthy non toxic cookware. It doesn't make any sense to purchase healthy whole foods and then cook them in toxic pots and pans.

Although stainless steel cookware has been considered a safe alternative, it does have one drawback. Stainless steel cookware is made with a combination of stainless steel, chromium and nickel. None of these are harmful in small doses, but many people are allergic to nickel. If you are allergic to nickel, you should refrain from using stainless steel cookware.

Another concern that many people are not aware of is that some glazes used on crock pots have small amount of lead. The recommendation is to use terra cotta crock pots without the lead glaze.

The best cookware which is healthy and non toxic is anodized aluminum cookware. The process used in making the hard anodized aluminum seals the aluminum with an extremely hard surface coating which is non-reactive and prevents any aluminum from leaching into the food we are cooking.

The following three companies have excellent hard anodized aluminum cookware sets that are healthy and non toxic:

Calphalon is the leading manufacturer but many other companies are now producing cookware sets made with the hard anodized aluminum. Calphalon cookware cooks evenly on lower heat and is stick-resistant. They have stainless steel handles which will stay cool during stovetop cooking. The pans and lids can be used in the oven and broiler.

Cuisinart has introduced a line of non-stick cookware called Cuisinart Green Gourmet Hard Anodized Cookware. They work just like the Teflon cookware, except they don't emit any of the toxic fumes that Teflon pans do. Just like the Teflon pans, they allow you to cook with less oil and they are also energy efficient and eco-friendly. This Green Gourmet cookware set is oven and broiler safe.

KitchenAid has their own set of non-stick anodized aluminum cookware called KitchenAid Gourmet Essentials. This cookware set features stainless steel handles coated with silicone grips. The lids are break resistant glass which makes it nice to see what you are cooking. These pots and pans are oven safe up to 400 degrees.

All three of these companies cookware sets are highly recommended healthy non toxic sets. I use the Kitchen Aid Gourmet Essentials cookware in my kitchen. It is the best value out of the three.

Bagpipe Blowpipe Maintenance

Most bagpipe blowpipe problems are caused by a faulty valve. A typical blowpipe valve has a round rubber flapper that is used as the sealing element. If the rubber has hardened or does not lay flat against the seat, replace the valve. If the rubber is dirty, sometimes a good cleaning will get the valve working properly again. With a flapper valve, you may need to adjust how the valve seats on the bottom of the blowpipe. You can move the copper stem up and down or bend it to get the valve seated better. You can also check that the bottom of the blowpipe is flat and smooth.

The blowpipe itself must also be airtight. To check this, place the mouthpiece in your mouth and suck on it. You should be able to stick your tongue to the mouthpiece if there is no air leaking. If the valve is good, then the leak is either at the joint between the blowpipe and mouthpiece or the blowpipe is cracked. If the joint is leaking, remove the mouthpiece and add some waxed hemp or Teflon tape to the joint until the leak is gone. If the blowpipe is cracked, you will need to replace it or have it repaired.

The size of the blowpipe bore is also important. The larger the bore, the more air that you can blow through it for the same amount of effort. Ideally, the blowpipe bore should be 3/8". If it is smaller than 1/4", you should consider having it bored out to 3/8" by a bagpipe maker/repairer.

Choosing a Japanese Shoji Screen

Introducton

One can attribute the beautiful clean lines of a Japanese residence to its uncluttered look. A Japanese home seems to be quite bare compared with its typical Western counterpart which is usually filled with large items of furniture, gadgets and ornaments.

A Japanese home usually uses natural materials in it finishes with lots of timber and stone adding to the sleek feel. In Japanese interior design less is definitely more and it is not like the West where people feel a need to add items to a room, indeed the goal is to keep distractions to a minimum and allow the beauty of the building and its materials to be admired.

In this article we will focus on the design and construction of shoji screens which when used in a home can impart a very Japanese style to ones decor.

Frames

A good quality western made shoji screen is ideally made with a beech frame, the ideal thickness being 1-3/8" with the kumiko or grid/lattice pattern being in cedar. The main frame should be finished with a clear catalyzed lacquer for ease in cleaning and durability.

Paper

Shoji paper is opaque and blocks the view but not the light. The paper used should preferably be Warlon paper which is a Japanese paper with a PVC resin laminated on each side. It is very durable and is also washable.

The most popular paper is white Warlon paper with a small amount of paper fiber but it is also obtainable in amber, bamboo and maple leaf patterns.

Where a more rigid screen is required the better choice would be Warlon Acrylic which has the appearance of Warlon paper but is a rigid sheet 2mm thick. it can be used in place of glass because it is resistant to water and weather.

If you already have windows which you want to give the appearance of shoji paper then you may convert them by using Haru Warlon which has the look of Warlon paper but is in fact a sticky-backed acrylic film for application to glass.

Laminated papers are also available, White Unryu is a very soft-looking paper with long curly paper fibers and Amber Kinwashi is a Japanese paper with short clipped fibers.

These papers get their strength because they are laminated onto both sides of a styrene core. For closet screens, cabinet doors or lighting fixtures single-sided Kinwashi and Unryu papers are also available.

On a more practical note one can easily change the shoji paper when it tears, or change it for a different colour or pattern when desired.

Tracks

Traditionally shoji screen tracks are made from wood and if given an occasional coat of paste wax and kept clean they should give good service for a long time. Wooden tracks are usually fixed to the ceiling and to the floor.

If you have a wood floor then the bottom track is usually made in wood the same as that used for the flooring and can be inlaid. Modern screens should incorporate a teflon guide to ensure smooth operation.

If you want to use a shoji screen to screen a wardrobe or closet then a metal, usually aluminum, track is preferable with rollers which, because they are captive in the track, cannot jump off or become jammed.

Details

An important design detail is the door pull, the recess where you can put your fingers to open and close the screen. The best ones are ebony and should be inlaid into the shoji frame, never attached to its surface.

If you have young children or pets you might consider a solid lower kick panel in the shoji screen. If you particular screen is wider or taller than normal then this panel can also help stiffen the screen.

Environmentally friendly

In these environmentally friendly days a shoji screen can also keep out the chill from a window in winter and enhance the efficiency of an air conditioner in the summer.

In a humid environment a shoji screen can control moisture in the room by absorbing it on humid days and then discharging it into the atmosphere when dryer conditions prevail.

Of course shoji screens are also made from natural materials from sustainable sources.

Atmosphere and Mystique

If you want to add an oriental flavour to your interior design scheme then adding some shoji screens could be the answer, they are a warm natural feature with geometrically designed lines.

The texture of wood and paper creates an aura of comfort while the geometric grid tightens the space. This contrast gives off an air of mystique and together with softened sun light coming through the atmospheric paper it bathes the room entirely.

Back to School Style For Boys

Boys will be boys and a long day at school usually involves a bit of rough and tumble, meaning school uniforms need to be tough and durable to stand up to the test. There's no need to worry, however, as many school uniform items have been designed with this in mind and are tough enough to withstand even the most boisterous of boys!

You may have noticed trousers and shorts now come in a 'Teflon coated' option. Teflon is a clever, modern addition to the fabric which repels water and protects clothes from spills by making them stain resistant. This can come in incredibly handy as both trousers and shorts are classic uniform items that look fashionable and smart when teamed with shirts, jumpers and polo shirts for summer cool or extra warmth in winter.

Another intelligent feature of modern uniforms is adjustable waistbands. Elasticated inserts at the waists of trousers and shorts result in the perfect fit for growing lads and mean you don't have to invest in yet another new pair before term finishes.

For all aspiring athletes there is an array of options, from comfy jogging trousers to cool shorts. Flow Injection Or Segmented Flow Analysis - What Are the Similarities and Differences?

The reason to use SFA or FIA

The reason to automate is so that you can run more samples. Running more samples is the same as increasing your productivity. Having an instrument run samples for you decreases your labor costs. Having the instrument do all those boring mixings and shakings increases your day to day precision. This improves quality and really helps with that QA/QC program. Whether you are a research facility, a municipal laboratory, or a commercial lab, you can benefit from automation.

Almost any method that can be done manually can be automated. Time consuming steps such as manual titrations can be replaced using instrumentation. Instruments can do digestions, distillations, dilutions, and filtrations all for you. More importantly, is that these methods are always duplicated exactly ensuring that quality control procedures are met.

Your most expensive cost is labor, and after that is supplies. A flow analyzer will allow you to do more samples in less time and increase the amount of time you or your staff spends on more important things like running other samples, reporting results, and doing that dreaded paper work. Automated equipment uses less reagents and generates less waste than manual methods do. This is not about getting rid of staff. This is about freeing up time so that staff can have time to prepare and run more samples. The beauty of the auto analyzer is that it is running samples while you are doing something else.

History of Flow Analysis

The original automated analyzer is the Auto Analyzer invented by Leonard Skeggs in 1954. It took the Technicon Corporation three years to perfect it and develop a commercial product. The concept of auto-analysis eventually branched out and has roots in almost every automated device we see today. Flow Injection Analysis was a way to get out of buying a Technicon Auto-Analyzer because a person with a peristaltic pump, some Teflon tubing, and a flow through spectrometer cell could fabricate their own device. In fact, the first FIA instruments were held together with Lego blocks. The first commercial FIA instrument was introduced by Tecator, the analytical branch of Perstorp.

All continuous flow analyzers share a commonality of parts with similar functions. All have an autosampler, pumps, reagent mixing manifolds comprised of tubing, a flow through detector, and a way to collect the signal. The signal is always expressed as a peak with a maximum and a baseline, and the peak is either bell shaped, or rectangular.

Segmented Flow Analysis (SFA)

Segmented Flow analysis is the first auto chemistry and is what Skeggs initially demonstrated to the Technicon corporation. Segmented flow enjoys over 50 years of success as a proven technology. Segmented flow is the basis of multiple automated EPA and many other regulatory methods.

A typical segmented flow analyzer pumps the sample into the cartridge using peristaltic pump tubing. The sample merges with an air segmented carrier stream, reagents are added and mixing occurs by end over end mixing in coils as the sample is transported down the path of the tubing. Depending on the internal tubing volume and the amount of time the transport from injection to detection takes there could be multiple samples inside the tubing at a given time. For instance, if the delay time is 10 minutes and samples are injected every minute there will be 10 samples traveling within the tubing.
Flow Injection Analysis (FIA)

Flow Injection Analysis is considered as an acceptable alternative to equivalent segmented flow methods. In other words, though USEPA method 350.1 is a segmented flow method, the USEPA considers a FIA method equivalent. There are thousands of literature references to FIA methods, and multiple ATP approvals. Since the EPA considers FIA equivalent to SFA, OI did not obtain EPA ATP letters. There are also several FIA methods that are EPA approved without an SFA equivalent, for instance CN by OIA1677.

In Flow Injection analysis the sample is injected by a valve into a carrier stream. The sample solution does not pass through peristaltic pump tubing prior to the valve. Mixing occurs as the sample travels through tightly wound Teflon mixing coils. Unlike segmented flow that may contain multiple samples within the tubing all at the same time, Flow injection injects a sample and detects it before the next sample is injected.

Comparison of SFA and FIA

Flow Injection is basically a derivative of SFA without air segmentation. Both SFA and FIA mix sample and reagents in a continuously flowing stream of reagents. The reaction that occurs, the peak shape, the sensitivity, and so forth is all determined by how the tubing is configured, where the reagents are teed in, and the length of the tubing that the reactions are happening in. Instrument manufacturers configure tubing "cartridges" according to published methodology, or develop methods based on R&D and published works.

An analyst can readily change and/or modify method performance simply by modifying any aspects of the analytical cartridge. Since the segmentation of SFA limits dispersion, SFA is a bit more forgiving than FIA in the length of tubing. For instance, the addition of extra tubing on a FIA method can significantly change peak shape and sensitivity, while additional tubing on a SFA system does not really matter. For example, at one of my previous laboratories we routed an SFA method that had a non-working heater cartridge through several feet of tubing to the fecal coliform bath and then back to the detector. Adding several feet of tubing would have been detrimental to FIA, but was un noticeable in the SFA method.

Literature is deceiving in sample size as SFA methods tend to use less sample than FIA. Throughput by FIA is not faster, and in fact it has been demonstrated that a well operated SFA system far exceeds FIA in samples per hour. SFA mixes by an end over end similar to putting sample and reagent in a vial and inverting. FIA mixes by what Ruzika termed "controlled dispersion" which is harder to explain than end over end, and is a result of solution flowing faster through the center than at its sides, and then rapidly colliding with the walls of the mixing coils and other flow interruptions placed in its path. SFA signals do not have to be brought to a maximum, but theoretical SFA should always be and the resulting peak would be rectangular. Because of the "tunneling" that occurs in FIA flow, a FIA peak is Gaussian.

It is hard to say exactly what the maximum time for a SFA incubation is because the only limiting factor is the minimal carryover that occurs as solution "transfers" from one segment to the next while traveling down the tube. Most FIA literature places 2 minutes at the maximum for FIA. In fact, Ruzika and Hansen gave a 1 minute maximum for FIA reaction.

Advantages of Flow Methods

Many methods are written specifically for continuous flow analysis. Some examples are ammonia by EPA 350.1 or Block digestion TKN by EPA 351.2. An example of a FIA method written specifically for FIA is OIA 1677. These EPA methods specify automated chemistry in the methodology itself. Other methods, such as the manual fluoride by ISE method, can be modified according to 40 CFR Part 136.6 and made into automatic methods. Continuous flow methods reduce manual labor and that reduction of manual labor tends to make precision better and reduce potential contamination. Flow methods also tend to have lower MDL's than manual methods and a better chance of fewer QC failures.
